Q1: Pollutants and Acid Precipitation List and briefly comment on seven criteria air pollutants? Is CO2 an air pollutant and why? What are acid gases? How do they form acid rain, snow, or precipitation? How do acid gases damage our environment, living beings, and man-made structures? Q2: Air Pollutant, CO Poisoning What is the adverse effect of the invisible killer, Carbon Monoxide CO, on human health, plants and materials? Estimate the percentage of HbCO in the blood of a traffic officer exposed to 40 ppm CO for several hours. Assume the HbCO content reaches 60% of its equilibrium saturation value. Q3: CAA, NAAQS, and Reduction of Pollutants When, how, and what is the Clean Air Act? What are Title I through Title VII concerning about. How much CAA brings in the reduction of criteria pollutants and how it benefits our living environment and individual health? What NAAQS concerns about? Q4: Air Quality Index (AQI) and Pollution What are six ranges and categories of AQI? How AQIs are calculated and colored? How they may affect and benefit our health and life? Q5: Particular Matters What are the sources of PMs and why we categorize PMs by 10 m, 2.5 m, 0.1 m? How PMs may affect our health and life? What are top 5 cities polluted by PMs, and top 5 cities have best air quality? How PMs can cause cancers/diseases and how many people died of air quality per year in the world? Q6: Perpetrators of Air Pollutants and CO2 What and how are top three perpetrators of our environment on air pollutants and greenhouse gases? Use a typical coal-fired power plant as example to delineate and environmental impacts in US and the world. Q7: Stratospheric O3 vs Photochemical/Smog O3 What are the differences of Stratospheric O3 and Smog (Photochemical) O3 in chemical composition and in its environmental impacts? How smog O3 is formed and what is its adverse effects on environmental and health? Q8: Stratospheric O3 Depletion and Holes How is stratospheric O3 protecting the Earth from high energy ultraviolet beams? How serious and where are the O3 holes? How does ultraviolet cause health problems? Q9: GHGs and Global Warming What are called greenhouse gases? What are their effects and mechanism on the global warming? CRITERIA AIR POLLUTANTS
1. List and briefly comment on seven criteria air pollutants. Is CO2 an air pollutant, and why?
What are acid gases? How do they form acid rain, snow, or precipitation? How do acid gases
damage our environment, living beings, and man-made structures?
The main criteria air pollutants are carbon monoxide, lead, Ozone, nitrogen dioxide,
particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide. However, carbon dioxide is not a
common criteria air pollutant as it does not have the National Air Quality Standards(NAQS) that
define its permissible concentrations in the ambient air as the other six (Guo & Zhang, 2017). An
acid gas is any gaseous compound which will form an acidic solution when dissolved in water.
Acidic gases, particularly nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide, react with clouds' tiny water
droplets to form acidic solutions. The rain that falls from these clouds is what is referred to as
"acid rain." Acid rain makes the waxy protective coating of leaves to wear away, thus preventing
them from photosynthesizing properly, kills aquatic animals, corrodes buildings and causes
health issues, especially lung issues, to human beings.
2. What is the adverse effect of the invisible killer, Carbon Monoxide (CO), on human health,
plants and materials? Estimate the percentage of HbCO in the blood of a traffic officer exposed
to 40 ppm CO for several hours. Assume the HbCO content reaches 60% of its equilibrium
saturation value.
Carbon monoxide causes the death of human beings when it binds with the hemoglobin
that carries oxygen in their blood. However, it does not harm plants as they oxidize it into carbon
dioxide, which is a raw material for the photosynthesis process (Kusumaningtiar & Ardillah,
2016). On material surfaces, carbon monoxide does not have detrimental effects. Given that 1
ppm= 0.0001%, 40 ppm = 0.004%.Using the formula, HbCO% saturation = CO content of blood
