In true experimental studies, the rules of experimentation, such as randomization should
be applied. Therefore, experimental designs involve each participant in the study having an equal
opportunity of being in the experimental or control groups. Such studies are the gold standard of
scientific research (Baron et al., 2016). However, in some cases, due to factors such as an
inadequate number of participants and other factors, researchers may opt to use quasiexperimental and non-experimental designs to complete their research. Therefore, it is important
to understand the later types of research as healthcare professionals.
Quasi-experimental designs study relationships between outcomes and treatments in
healthcare in studies where the treatments are not assigned randomly to participants. They can be
very good at studying the effectiveness of the large-scale application of policies in healthcare.
