The movie I have selected for ethical analysis, in this case, is Gattaca. The main theme
discussed in the film is how individuals should be judged. Thus, in the movie, those involved
are judged based on a particular genetic code and not the personality or ambitions that they
exhibit. Therefore, this raises a lot of ethical issues that are associated with genetic
engineering that display discrimination, inequality, and lying.
The first ethical case is that the majority of the issues that are mentioned in the movie are not
solved. However, in the end, Vincent was in a position to continue with is the mission and
never punished because of lying. Therefore, a lot of cases of discrimination are evident
throughout the movie. Also, when Vincent’s boss his killed and investigations are carried out,
the police find an eyelash of Vincent, which is declared invalid. However, instead of
detectives investigating within the workplace to connect the murder, they move out to search
in areas where most invalids live. This illustrates discrimination, given that all people have
similar rights and are supposed to be protected by the law. However, in this case, the invalids
are treated as if they are not human beings but just criminals (Kirby, 2004).
