1. Your best friend
2. People reading a newspaper editorial you have written
3. Your professor
4. The audience at a conference where you are presenting
Consider how your audience might influence the information you include in a historical analysis essay
about the women’s suffrage movement.
What audience would be most interested in reading about the women’s movement? How would you
tailor your presentation to that audience? What message would be most appropriate for this audience?
Let’s say the intended audience for your historical analysis essay about the legal battle for women’s
suffrage is a group of civil rights lawyers. How would you explain the legal background of the Constitution
and the Nineteenth Amendment? How would this approach compare with and contrast to an audience of
high school students?
Was President Kennedy’s decision to support the Equal Rights Amendment a necessary cause for the
amendment’s passage by Congress?
Was the social tumult of the 1960s a necessary cause of the women’s liberation movement?
Simone de Beauvoir was the intellectual founder of the women’s liberation movement. Tailor this thesis
statement into a message suitable for an audience of high-school history students.
The women’s movement’s focus on issues related to sexual freedom, including reproductive rights,
galvanized support among younger women but alienated many older, more conservative women. Tailor
this message for an audience consisting of students in a women’s studies class.

HIS 200 Project 1 Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
History is for human self-knowledge . . . the only clue to what man can do is what man has done. The value of history, then, is that it teaches us what man has
done and thus what man is.
—R. G. Collingwood
Historical awareness informs various aspects of our lives. We live in a time of rapid change, and we often think more about the future than the past. However,
studying history can help us better understand our own lives in the context of the places we live and society in general. In America, specifically, the government is
informed by its citizens. If the ideals of society shift, that shift will eventually move throughout the different levels of government, effecting widespread change.
For the projects in this course, you will select a historical event that has impacted American society in some way. You may select an event that was discussed in
the course, or you may select your own event, with instructor approval. You may consider using the event you chose to work on in your Perspectives in History
class, if that event is something you wish to investigate further through this assessment.
In Project 1, you will develop a plan for an essay on this historical event. The plan will include a brief description of the selected historical event and the resources
you will use in your research. In addition, you will identify an audience for your essay and decide how to communicate your information to this audience. In
Project 2, you will write an essay analyzing the historical event you selected, examining its impact on society as well as its impact on you personally.
Project 1 addresses the following course outcomes:
Select appropriate and relevant primary and secondary sources in investigating foundational historic events
Communicate effectively to specific audiences in examining fundamental aspects of human history
Apply key approaches to studying history in addressing critical questions related to historical narratives and perspectives
Prompt
Your writing plan should answer the following prompt: Select a historical event that has impacted American society. Develop a plan for writing your essay,
describing the historical event, selecting appropriate resources for your research, and identifying an audience for your essay. The purpose of this writing plan is to
provide you with a way to gather your thoughts and begin thinking about how to support your thesis statement. The following critical elements will be assessed
in a 1- to 2-page word processing document.
1
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I.
Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant?
II.
Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of
an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources?
What makes these sources appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources?
How did you make choices?
III.
Describe at least two primary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of
an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: How do these sources relate to your secondary sources? What do they
add to your understanding of the event? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event?
IV.
Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related to the historical event you selected. In other words, what
would you like to know more about?
V.
Identify an audience that would be interested in your historical event and research question. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your
message?
VI.
Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand historical
terminology and principles associated with your event, or will you need to explain these? How will you communicate effectively with your audience?

Preliminary Writing Plan
The historical event I selected involves the Irish Immigration Experience. This event is
important as the Irish Immigrant population were considered to be one of the early popular and
largest cultural group among the minorities in the United States. Being one of the oldest
immigrants, they are considered to have played a significant role in the growth of the historical
American, including the industrial revolution, which is one of the pillar events that has made the
United States become a superpower.
For my secondary souraces, I chose Almeida (2001), which is a book that discusses the
participation of Irish Immigrants in building the modern New York City. The other source is a
document by Silva (2016), which highlights how and why the Irish Immigrants came to the US,
and how they adapted to the city. These two articles are relevant since they both explain the history
of Irish Immigrants in the US and what they managed to do for the country.
The question I would like to find out is whether the Irish Immigrants faced discrimination
when they first arrived in the US.
Ireland in the 19th Century was a period in which most of the land was owned by few
landowners, and they would lease the land to tenants at a fee. According to Silva (2016), with the
majority of the people having no land of their own and the high tenancy fees, contributed to the
widespread immigration of the Irish Immigrants into the US. Since they had a little educational
background and were predominantly being from a tenant farming background, Irish Immigrants
could only find jobs in industries and factories on the manual labor sector.
2
According to Almeida (2001), both the early missionaries and settlers in the United States
faced discrimination against Northern Ireland Catholics. The author also highlights that the Irish
Immigrants faced discrimination and violence at the hands of the Native Americans. Most of the
Natives feared that their jobs were being taken over and that the increasing population of the
Immigrants would spark a revolution where the number of Irish Immigrants was growing
increasingly significant compare to that of Native Americans. This sparked several meetings and
protests in a bid to seek fairness for its members. A publication on the winter 1986 newsletter in
the Emeralds society Newsletter, a representative to the coalition, published a statement
encouraging Immigrants to be strong as they face discrimination and stand together in the big to
fight the menace to attain Equal Rights under the Law.
Assignment Feedback:
Choosing a historical event to write an historical analysis essay is
very important process in becoming a historian. The choice is based
on making your viewpoints heard and being original in a field that is
overcrowded. You choose a great historical event, give a great
description of what the event is and provide a new fresh idea on
where you have to go with your essay. Well Done!
Having strong secondary sources, is important to a historian, to help
build credibility and accuracy in your work. You have several very
strong, secondary sources! These sources will greatly aid you in
putting together your assignment.
3
Having a strong research question for your topic, is fundamental is
providing a good writing plan!! You have a great one here!! I look
forward to seeing the results from it!!
No major grammatical errors, sentence structure issues, or anything
else! Great Job!

Immigration among the Irish prevalent during the early eighteenth century. The primary
jobs for the immigrants were industrials and provision of cheap labor for the wealthy business
people (Malcolm & Hall, 2019). The missionaries played a significant role during the early
periods to eliminate the hardships the Irish individuals were going through under their masters.
My research question will be "How the immigration hardships impacted the Irish during the
early periods of the nineteenth century." research will provide credible, reliable, and accurate
information that will ne beneficial to a variety of groups (Malcolm & Hall, 2019). The primary
audience of my research will be the Irish researchers and citizens who are sensitive about the
plight their forefathers passed through in the hands of the colonizers before the coming of the
missionaries. The researchers being the primary audience will use my information for future
studies concerning the challenges the Irish went through. The citizen will use my data to learn
and understand more facts about the early generation and compare them with the modern
generation.
Since my focus will be concentrating on the Irish people, I will customize my message to
address the specific events that occurred among the Irish people. The tailoring of the information
will be a strategy to promote quick gathering of data about the Irish; thus, promoting quick
analysis and comprehension of the Irish immigration in the early century. I will focus on using
both primary and secondary sources of data to gather my information about the Irish. Some of
the primary sources of data I will use include interviewing the veterans who survived the
difficult situations of immigration (Malcolm & Hall, 2019). My research will considerably rely
on credible, reliable, and peer-reviewed journals, documentaries, and early times newspapers. I
will also use the net to research on trustworthy information concerning the Irish immigration and

the challenges the Irish went through. My primary objective of this research is to provide the
recipients of this information with credible and accurate information that can be used for future
references.

Topic and Research Question
Topic: The name of the topic for my project one is ‘Irish Immigration Experience’. The initial
notable group of Irish migration into the US started as early as 1979, following the depression
and low harvests in the linen business, which brought about difficulties in Ireland. At around
1784, the period following the American Revolutionary War, approximately 400, 000 Irish
dwelled in the new US. Amid the 60 years, which were towards the onset of the US Civil War
(1861-1865), the Irish turned out to be among the country's most known and largest cultural
groups among the minorities. Regardless of the decrease in migration from Ireland in the period
around the 20th century, Irish migrants and their progenies have proceeded to be a vital part of
the US antique (Silva, 2016). Amid the early 19the century, Ireland was perceived as the primary
bases of immigration to the US. Irish migrants offered much of the work force and labor to the
US towns and cities as well as the transportation system and assisted in the establishment of
Roman Catholicism in the US.
Research Questions: Irish immigrants have always reported cases of discrimination in other parts
of the world, such instances of discrimination shaped the manner in which they accessed different
resources like healthcare services. The increase in their population had increased the tension
among the residents following the fear that they would increase the rate of unemployment in the
US (Heer, 2018). Such issues give rise to several research questions that need to be answered in
2
order to understand the issue. Do you think the Irish immigrants encountered episodes of
discrimination when they first arrived in the US? What are some of the assimilation strategies did
the group use acclimatize to the behaviors and norms of the local communities?
Assignment Feedback:
One of the biggest keys, to having a successful writing plan, is having
a strong research topic, that would be interesting to research,
provide enough detail to research a strong question, and being able
to find your own little niche in the topic. You have an excellent one,
here! Kudos!
Having a strong research question for your topic, is fundamental is

Great job with your first overall writing plan!! It looks like you have a
great start to this assignment!! As you start putting together the final
product. Please make sure that you are looking for your primary and
