Background of the study

The purpose of this study is to come up with a qualitative research critique of two articles. One
of the articles is Standardizing the Bedside report to promote Nurse Accountability and Work
Effectiveness by Walsh, Messmer, Hetzler, O’Brien and Winning ham (2018). The objective of
this study was to evaluate different ways of standardizing bedside shift handover so as to
enhance accountability of nurses and work effectiveness.
The other article is Implementation of a Modified Bedside Handoff for a Postpartum Unit by
Wallenhaup, Stephenson, Thomson, Gordon and Nun. The objective of this study was to explore
the effects of implementing a nursing shift handover on patient satisfaction in a postpartum unit.
The findings of the two studies indicated that shift reporting at the bedside positively affects the
quality of nursing and patient satisfaction.
The practice issue that is pointed out is related to patient handoffs in nursing station that results
to a communication breakdown. It has been identified that effective communication during
handing off of patients is a very crucial tool that ensures critical information about the patient is
conveyed to the incoming nurses from the outgoing ones. This consequently enhances the
outcomes of the patients by reducing medication errors. Nevertheless, breakdown in
communication may occur as a result of many factors like nurses getting involved in things like
socializing when reporting at the nursing station. Hence the PICOT question that have been
formulated for this paper is: for inpatients (P) does reporting at the bedside (I) as compared to
nursing station reporting (C) contribute positively towards patient satisfaction (O) for a period of
eight weeks (T).

How the Two Articles Support the Nurse Practice Issue
The two articles support the identified nurse practice issue. In specific, the article by Wash et al.
(2018) surveyed how handing over shifts at the bedside can enhance nurse’s effectiveness and in
turn promote patient satisfaction hence this study greatly supports the nursing practice issue
since it analyses the significance of bedside reporting as in contrast to reporting at the nursing
station. Wollenhaup et al. (2017) study surveyed how implementing shift reporting at the bedside
ca help enhance satisfaction of patients in a postpartum unit. Conclusively, this study gives an
insight of significance of bedside shift reporting as in contrast to reporting in a nursing station
and therefore supports the identified practice issue.
Methods of study
Walsh et al. (2018) study used qualitative descriptive case study whereby they obtained samples
from queen’s land hospital in Australia and studied how patients perceived shift to shift handover
in nursing. Oral interviews with nine open ended questions were held by the investigator. The
interviews were face to face, audio taped, semi-structured and thirty to sixty minutes’ duration.
Inclusion criteria were speaking English and were inpatients for at least overnight. Quasi
experimental before and after implementation design was also employed whereby, they obtained
samples from all patients and reporting nurses from seven health facilities in huge university
hospital. Bedside nursing report were implemented in this method and seventeen item surveys
using open ended question that sort to understand perception of bedside reporting were issued to
