Subject of the paper: Psychology Free Response (2 Questions)

Requirement: These two questions should be answered from a psychological point of view, following the indications :

Question 1. Stella loves everything coconut! She particularly likes coconut flavored Chapstick, body lotion, and shampoo. After Salinger has been dating Stella for a while, he finds that he really likes coconut flavored or scented things now. He even finds that when he smells or tastes coconut, he feels warm, happy, and calm. (20 points

  • Apply classical conditioning to Salinger’s new love of coconut flavor. Be sure to apply the following concepts correctly: unconditioned stimulus, unconditioned response, neutral stimulus, conditioned stimulus, conditioned response. You do not need to define these terms, just use them properly.
  • Explain the role of generalization and extinction with respect to how these may occur in this scenario.
  • What role may operant conditioning play in Salinger’s continued love of coconut flavor? Be specific to the kind of reinforcement.

What role could the hippocampus, episodic memory, and oxytocin play in Salinger’s new found love of everything coconut?

Question 2. Stella is feeling burned out and disinterested in her daily life. She used to love school and being out with friends, but things seem more unmotivating now. She recalls learning about operant conditioning and cognitive factors in learning from her high school AP Psychology class. Explain how she may apply the following concepts to helping her find more motivation and joy in life? (24 points)

  • Positive Reinforcement
  • Negative Reinforcement
  • Learned helplessness
  • Chaining
  • Extrinsic motivation
  • Observational learning
  • Internal locus of control
  • Self-control

Format: When responding to an FRQ, you want to be specific, detailed, and accurate in your response. Use only complete sentences and paragraph format. DO NOT list or bullet point responses. Do only what the prompt demands but pay attention to those demands. Underline the key verbs in the prompt: analyze, define, describe, discuss, explain, identify, relate and show. These verbs directly tell you what to do with concepts. Type or NEATLY hand write these responses. If I cannot read or follow your responses, you will lose points for organization and clarity. Organize your response to make it clear what concept you are explaining and apply.

Question 1
Salinger never loved coconut scented products before meeting Stella; however, Stella had
developed the love prior. Therefore, through the application of classical conditioning, learning
through association made him love coconut scent too. It is through the actions of unconditional
stimulus and unconditional response amongst them that made Salinger addicted to coconut
products. The environmental stimulus has brought forth new behavior to Salinger, which is yet to
be learned (De Houwer, 2018). Therefore, through unconditional responses or actions, there are
natural responses accompanied that have not been taught. The scent of coconut, in this case, is a
neutral signal, and the conditioned response is love. Therefore, after the association of neutral
stimulus and the environmental stimulus, the scent of coconut products produces a feeling of
love in Salinger.
