Description
Attached are faculty survey data from a university in Texas. They want to know if salary is correlated with years of teaching experience as well as if salaries are equal for males (males =1) and females (females=2).
A college in Texas pulled salary information to answer several questions about salary equity. Please answer the following research questions by analyzing the provided data. Present your answers in a narrative form and elaborate so the reader can make sense of your findings. For example, describe what statistical procedures you used as well as your findings.
- What are the measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) for faculty salaries and years of teaching experience? What are the measures of dispersion (variance, standard deviation) for salaries and years of teaching experience?
- What relationship is there between salary and years of teaching experience? (Relationship should make you think of Correlation).
- What number and proportion of the faculty are men? What number and proportion of the faculty are women?
- How do women and men compare on salary and are these differences statistically significant? How do women and men compare on years of teaching and are these differences statistically significant? (Comparisons of group means should make you think about Independent Samples T-tests).
- Just interpret this: The university statistician used an ANCOVA procedure to control for years of teaching and its effect on salary. When years of teaching are taken into account, men are likely to earn $34,000/year whereas women were likely to earn $31,656/year.
- What is the earnings gap?
- What is the practical significance of this gap?
- What are some other variables that we should take into account?
