Reasons Why Gun Control Is Effective
Summary
The citizens of the United States are allowed to hold firearms so that they can protect
themselves from criminals and potentially oppressive regimes. Because holding guns by civilians
can also lead to the increased commission of crimes, however, gun control policies and laws are
enforced by states and federal governments. The effectiveness of gun control is due to the strict
policies, the support from citizens and levels of governments, and the policies’ aim of reducing
the number of people holding firearms in public. The policies and laws are reviewed from time to
time for them to remain effective and keep firearms out of the wrong hands, and thus reducing the
incidences of gun related violence, suicides from guns and violent crime in general.
Laws in the United States permit deserving citizens to hold a gun. The rationale for
allowing citizens to hold a gun is to enable them to protect themselves from oppressive regimes
(Hood, 2009). Possession of guns also reduces the dependence of the citizens on the police as they
can intervene if they feel that their security and safety is compromised. The United States,
however, implements strict laws and policies which control how guns are issued, held and used by
the citizens. For example, the laws restrict gun possession to only people with a sound mind,
denying mentally challenged and drug addicts the right to possess firearms (Hoskin, 2011). Gun
