SSS 756: ASSIGNMENT #2 1 GUIDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENT #2: EVALUATION PROPOSAL OUTLINE* * Papers are to be formatted in APA style. In addition, they are to be 2 pages in length. This does not include your cover and reference pages. Developed by Elisabeth Lean, Ph.D. (CUA/NCSSS_2018) Purpose: In this course, you will be developing a proposal to evaluate a single–system design (SSD), client–centered, evidence–based practice intervention.1 Thus, this assignment serves as the framework from which you will craft the first part of your proposal. Important: You must include at least one citation per paragraph, where applicable (e.g. N/A with respect to the Research Question and Hypothesis section). Draw from the most current literature available (i.e., professional organizations’/government briefs, white papers, etc. and peer–reviewed articles published within the last five years). Unacceptable sources of information include those from general websites such as Wikipedia and About.com. It is expected that if students choose to use electronic media, they evaluate websites in terms of, but not limited to, authorship, content, currentness, etc. Summarize, synthesize, paraphrase, and cite key points/findings. In addition, direct quotes should be used sparingly. Per The Catholic University of America’s Center for Academic Success, there are three instances in which the use of direct quotes is appropriate. See http://success.cua.edu/services/quote-and-paraphrases.cfm for more information. All resources identified in your reference list must be cited in the text of your paper. Lastly, do not write in either first (e.g., I, we, my, our, etc.) or second (e.g., you, your, and yours) person. Format: In essay format (re: write no more than two to three sentences introducing your topic and outlining what will be covered in this paper), address the following: I. Statement of the Problem: 1 page Identify and briefly explain the problem that you have chosen to address. Indicate who (re: population) is affected by the problem. Place the problem in context (e.g., age/stage of development, gender, race/ethnicity, family–composition, etc.). Describe how the problem manifests. Discuss how the problem is relevant to social work and why employing a SSD, client–centered approach to address/alleviate the problem is relevant to clinical social work practice evaluation. II. Evidence–Based Practice Intervention: 0.5–.75 pages Identify and briefly describe the EBP intervention that will be used to address the problem. Present a theoretical and/or conceptual rationale as to why this intervention is expected to have a positive impact on the problem. Include (re: cite) evidence from at least two peer– 1 Proposal topics, such as evaluating the effectiveness of medication in treating anxiety, are not appropriate. However, proposal topics that consider the effectiveness of a particular intervention for addressing/alleviating anxiety, with or without medication, may be acceptable pending instructor approval. SSS 756: ASSIGNMENT #2 2 reviewed journal articles of studies that have used this intervention and demonstrated its effectiveness in relation to the problem and/or population. Based on the problem and population identified above, provide a brief, concrete example of the client system (e.g., individuals, couples, families, etc.) who will serve as the subject(s) of your clinical social work practice evaluation. Given the problem, from the perspective of your client system, delineate one potential goal (re: outcome) that the intervention is meant to address. III. Research Question and Hypothesis: 1 paragraph (no more than 3 sentences) Present a possible research question and hypothesis that could be used as the basis for setting up your social work practice evaluation strategy. Specify the independent and dependent variables. Grading Rubrics Content—30 points  Introduction—5 points  Statement of the Problem—12 points  Evidence–Based Practice Intervention—8 points  Research Question and Hypothesis—5 points Academic Expression/Writing Mechanics—15 points  1 point: Did the author refrain from writing in first (e.g., I, we, etc.) and second (e.g., you, your, etc.) person?  1 point: Were unacceptable resources (e.g., from general websites such as Wikipedia and About.com) used?  2 points: Where applicable, was there at least one citation per paragraph?  2 points: Were direct quotes used sparingly?  3 points: Did the author demonstrate clarity of thought, and was the paper well–organized?  3 points: Did the author have limited/no errors with regard to grammar and sentence structure?  3 points: Did the author have limited/no errors with regard to punctuation and spelling? Please note, you are free to download this template, use it to complete the two outlines you have chosen to review (make sure you indicate either on the form or in naming the file the student’s name), and upload it to your small group’s discussion board. I. Statement of the Problem • Do you have an overall sense of the problem to be addressed? • Has the population been specifically identified? • Was the problem placed in context? • Do you have an overall sense of how the problem manifests? • Did the author discuss (adequately) how the problem is relevant to social work? • Does the author make a compelling case as to why employing a SSD, client–centered approach to address/alleviate the problem is relevant to clinical social work practice evaluation? II. Evidence–Based Practice Intervention • Has the EBP intervention that will be used to address the problem identified and briefly described? • Does the author offer a theoretical and/or conceptual rationale as to why this intervention is expected to have a positive impact on the problem? • Have at least two peer–reviewed journal articles of studies that have used this intervention and demonstrated its effectiveness in relation to the problem and/or population been cited? • Did the author provide a brief, concrete example of one client system who will serve as the subject(s) of his/her clinical social work practice evaluation? Is the client system congruent with the population? • Has a potential goal that the intervention is meant to address been stated and framed from the perspective of the client system? III. Research Question and Hypothesis • Were a possible research question and possible hypothesis presented? • Did the author identify the independent and dependent variables? SSS 756: DISCUSSION #3 RUBRIC • Based on your understanding of the problem, intervention, client system, and goal, are the research question and hypothesis specific as well as germane to the overall topic? IV. Consultation Evaluation, like research, is a collaborative process. Thus, based on your consideration of the above questions, offer two substantive, explicit recommendations to each of your colleagues for further contemplation. Please note, whether your recommendations are incorporated in part or in full are up to the discretion of each author. • Recommendation 1: • Recommendation 2: 2 Running Head: Evaluation Proposal Outline 1 2 Evaluation Proposal Outline Introduction. This research experiment will look at how using the Empathy Scale to measure the effectiveness of therapy before and after therapeutic services in high school students involved in restorative practices. The Empathy Scale and model has been very helpful with students in seeing how students’ behaviors change with several interactions with a therapist, and therapeutic goals setting. Empathy is a core principle essential to social work. The Empathy Scale will address a gap in social work knowledge regarding the realistic evaluation of empathy amongst high school students and their behaviors. Statement of the Problem. By definition, empathy is the capacity to recognize emotions that are being experienced by another person (Hasgül & Serpen 2014).The issues is not that students have empathy difficulties, but their lack of empathy, and bad choices in life send students down the wrong path and most of the times, the students are getting involved with the criminal justice system or restorative justice system. When using the empathy approach, we tend to have the student’s issues evaluated by a clinical therapist. The target students will be males ages 13-17 using It has been stated that “empathy impairment” as one of the origins of youth criminal behavior. (Milojević 2014). We would want to change the student’s mindset and be able to use different methods of coping, as well as empathy to change their behaviors. Evidence-Based Practice Intervention. In the study the students will take a pre Empathy Scale Questionnaire assessments to evaluate their empathy levels throughout an the initial two weeks of a course in restorative practice class, as well as taking a post Empathy Scale Questionnaire assessments to evaluate their empathy levels throughout the final two weeks of the restorative practice class. In this the 3 Evaluation Proposal Outline student will see a therapist, as well as journal, reflective thinking and use of victim empathy models in the class. The students will complete the assessments and review their scores from the initial assessment and see if any discrepancies or positive and negative changes occurred with their scores. Research Question and Hypothesis. Research questions and hypothesis that could be used as the basis for setting up the social work evaluation strategies are: 1) Do youth who receive therapy sessions founded on restorative practices with a focus on empathy have more success than youth who opted out of participating in therapy? 2) Utilizing EBP interventions and the Empathy Scale, how can we impact at risk youth who struggle to deal with empathizing and sympathizing with their victims. 3) Has the student continued to have behaviors both before and after therapeutic services and using the empathy scale? . The research experiment will look at the use of Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS)
to help a therapist and client to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic sessions with women in
abusive marriages suffering from depression. The scale is useful in assessing the level of
depression and other symptoms of anxiety and stress. DASS will evaluate the gap in evaluating
the levels of depression in married women experiencing the symptoms.
I.

Statement of the Problem
Social work practitioners encounter women in toxic marriages in their practice. Women

in abusive marriages are at a high risk of experiencing mental health problems such as
depression. Domestic violence occurs differently; in this research, the focus is on the imp...
