Summary of the Case study
The case study that the assignment focuses on involves rediscovering the blue oceans, a
reference gotten from the metaphors by Kim and Mauborgne used to refer to market good and
excessively competitive markets. According to the article, blue oceans are markets that are
uncontested and wide allow organizations to grow by making the consumers believe that there is
only one right provider that is good enough for them. The red oceans, on the other hand, are
markets where there is a tough competition, and businesses struggle to survive, and others fail
(Asian Health Services: Rediscovering a Blue Ocean). In the case, the Asian Health Services
(AHS) created a blue ocean by focusing in an area that no other institutions that offer similar
services had tried and created a market of its own with no competition.
The institution became suited for its niche by employing staff that was bilingual or
multilingual and therefore attracted people from the Asian community who were unserved. At
the time, the Asian community was seen as the model minority group, and therefore, there was
minimal attention given to them. Also, due to cultural differences, the group of people needed a
provider that served their needs. The AHS manages to attract financing and become sustainable
because of its special focus on the group of disadvantaged people and its strategy of offering
high quality primary care to its patients. However, with time, changes in the demography of
