GUIDELINES AND GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

The purpose of writing is for you to present your thoughts on an assigned topic or question that are backed up by material you find in sources (books, articles, websites etc.)

Any material you use from another source must be attributed. The material may be directly quoted, summarized, or paraphrased. But if the idea you are discussing is someone else’s, you must give credit to that source in your writing.

Using the APA style is a key part of doing this assignment and not something “extra.”

To use APA style properly, you must give a proper citation for all source material you use and you must include a list of “references” (all the sources you used) at the end of your paper. There are very specific formats for doing both these things and you are expected to follow those.

In addition to using APA style, your work should be free of spelling and technical errors. You cannot rely on spell check to do your proofreading for you as the program is not designed to discern between similar words and define all grammatical errors.

Lessons from the Book ‘Serial Killers - The Method and Madness of Monsters’
‘Serial Killers - The Method and Madness of Monsters’ is a book that was written by Peter
Vronsky. The book is not a fictional one as it focuses on real cases of murder and real serial killers.
Vronsky looks at serial murder from its first case in ancient Rome to many other instances
throughout history. Reading the book presents several lessons to the reader about serial killing and
society.
Killers aren't aliens; they are the gentle souls around the victims
According to Vronsky (2004), one of the serial murderers that is the subject of his book,
says, "We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will
be more of your children dead tomorrow." The statement is a terrifying one. It sounds like serial
murdering will never stop because the murderers are everywhere.
The underlying message is that those who can kill others could be close relatives of the
victims, looking at the statement keenly. The statement says that anybody can become a killer. A
woman could be cuddling in bed with her husband, and he suddenly strangles her to death. Serial
killers don't come from space; they exist around us. The lesson means that people should be on the
lookout whenever a loved one displays strange behaviors; they might be the serial killer the
television talks about.
The lesson is very crucial when it comes to investigations. Investigators consider all forms
of evidence available and all possible suspects. Many times, it is rare for investigators to imagine
that the dead victim was killed by his brother (Time-life, 2017). Therefore, they tend to cast the
net away from home. The knowledge that killers could be the closest people to the victim helps
investigators also to consider even close people as suspects, therefore investigating them.

Robert Lyons fits perfectly in this lesson. In 2011, the 39-year old guy killed his mother
for one of the most bizarre reasons ever. Robert killed his mother for refusing to get him tickets
for an Avril Lavigne concert happening in Chicago (Time-life, 2017). In usual circumstances, no
one could believe that a man could kill his mother, especially for a reason as bizarre as this one.
Robert's mother could never have guessed that her son could stab and ultimately kill her. However,
it happened, meaning that even the closest of people can turn murderers.
The responsibility falls solely on the offenders
The serial killing comes with a lot of justifications. In a trial, the defense tries to come up
with explanations like mental illnesses to absolve their clients of murder (Vronsky, 2004). It means
that in many cases, a section of society tries to pin the blame of murder on mental illnesses or
external motivations than on the perpe...
