1. Of the "Reasons for Acquisitions" discussed in the chapter, which reasons are the
primary drivers of the Lafarge-Holcim merger strategy?
One of the reasons as to why Lafarge and Holcim resorted to entering into a merger is to
offset competition. A critical strategy that can help firms to beat competition, regardless of the
industry in which they fall under, to include the construction and building industry, is entering
into a merger agreement. With a merger strategy, Lafarge and Holcim were able to attain a larger
market share under one roof. This plays a significant role in making the firms to be the most
successful in the market, with the relevant metric, in this case, being the market share.
The need to pursue an expansion/growth strategy is the other reason as to why Lafarge and
Holcim chose to merge. It is noted that both entities were intending to expand their operations so
that they may become competitive at the global level. The only way that this would be achieved
at the global level is for the two firms to combine efforts and operate as one, hence necessitating
