Generalized Anxiety Disorder Case Study
The purpose of this paper is to offer an appropriate approach to a patient who is
diagnosed with a generalized anxiety disorder. This mental pathology is characterized by an
increasing level of worry due to various things. Most of the patients are overly concerned with
different elements such as work, health, money or family. In terms of epidemiology, it tends to
affect almost 6.8 million adults, which represent approximately 3.1% of the entire population in
the United State. In terms of gender, it seems that females tend to be more affected. Even though
etiology is not currently known it seems like different elements such as family background, life
trauma, and continuous stress can trigger this condition. This paper will analyze a patient with
GAD and what would be the correct approach in the given scenario. (Strohle,Gensische,2018)

Case Presentation
In the given scenario, the patient is a 46 years old male who was referred to our clinic
after visiting the ER stating that he has symptoms of myocardial infarction. Even though he is
known for suffering from a mild form of hypertension, his blood pressure values are controlled.
After a normal EKG, his risk of heart attack was ruled out. During the assessment, he expressed
symptoms of panic attacks such as shortness of breath and feeling like a tightness at the level of
the chest.
The HAM-A test is delivered to the patient which points out a score of 26. Based on the
result results and the subjective experiences of the paper, a diagnosis of generalized anxiety
disorder is chosen. The patient is now at our clinical and looking for the correct approach to
manage his symptoms and avoid further situations as the one mentioned above.
Decisions Presentation

RUNNING HEAD: Case Study
For efficient treatment, several approaches were presented. In the given case, three of
them were chosen in order to ensure an adequate step by step treatment for the patient with the
GAD diagnosis. The following represent the decisions which will be broadly discussed in the
upcoming paragraphs:

Begin Zoloft orally,50 mg Daily

Increase the dose of Zoloft from 50 mg to 75 mg

Maintain the current medication

Decision 1
The first decision consists of starting the patient of Zoloft, a dosage of 50 mg, P.O, B.I.D. It
is important to avoid starting the patient of a high amount due to the fact that it is possible to
achieve the expected result with a lower dose. On the other hand, high doses can also increase
the risk of side effects. By starting the patient on 50 mg, the physician can get a baseline
response of the drug and determine if any reactions contraindicated this administration.
Zoloft contains the active substance sertraline. Sertraline is a selective inhibitor of
reabsorption of serotonin (SSRI). It works by preventing the re-uptake of the neurotransmitter
serotonin into nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Neuromediators are chemicals that
transmit chemical signals from one nerve cell to another. Low levels of serotonin in the cent...
