“A knowledge worker is anyone who works for a living at the tasks of developing or using knowledge (Links to an external site.). For example, a knowledge worker might be someone who works at any of the tasks of planning, acquiring, searching, analyzing, organizing, storing, programming, distributing, marketing, or otherwise contributing to the transformation and commerce of information and those (often the same people) who work at using the knowledge so produced. MOTIVATION PLAN FOR KNOWLEDGE WORKERS
Introduction
Motivation is one of the most crucial determinants of the success of an
organization. Motivation is generally associated with commitment to the organization, high
productivity, as well as creativity (Nelson & Quick, 2012, pp. 75-88). However, motivating
knowledge workers- those who are professionally involved in planning, acquisition, searching,
analysis, organization, programming, marketing, distribution (the commerce of information) - is
skewed and difficult, more so in the modern era. Motivating knowledge workers is a growing
challenge in recent times because of high-stress levels, and lack of fulfillment among employees
cause by job insecurity, limited growth opportunities, and unmanageable workload or even
expectations. The knowledge worker is, essentially, a product of radical social transformations
traced as far back as the 20th Century (Turriago-Hoyos et al., 2016). Advancement in technology
and industrialization has resulted in a paradigm shift in values in the knowledge-prudent
professional world. Waves of corruption and unfairness mar the intrinsic paradigms that enhance
motivation. As such, it is prudent for managers and executives in the business to formulate and
implement appropriate strategies that enhance and sustain high levels of motivation in
knowledge workers.
The chosen setting for formulating this motivation plan for knowledge workers is
formulating a robust motivation plan for design engineers both in construction and project
management companies. This plan is an elaborate attempt by yours; indeed, a hopeful human
resource manager in the future to formulate a motivation plan for its design engineers.

Characteristics of the Knowledge Worker
General characteristics
Some general features that define a knowledge worker, as Krausert (2013) argues include:

output measures productivity as opposed to the quantity.

The tasks associated with knowledge work are non-repetitive.

Responsibility is placed on knowledge workers for the productivity of individual
knowledge. To a large extent, knowledge workers have a degree of professional
autonomy in delivery.

Innovation, growth, expansion, and continuity of knowledge through motivating learning
and teaching.

The knowledge worker is seen, in most cases, as an asset to the organization and not a
cost.
