ECE 355: Understanding Behavior and Family Dynamics
The main goals of parenting include improving the child’s health and safety, enhancing
chances of making the child a productive adult later in their life, and passing on the right cultural
beliefs and practices. Children grow up differently. One influential factor that determines who
the child becomes and how they behave is parenting styles (Wardle, & Fitzpatrick, 2016). Some
children are known to throw temper tantrums while others are humble and obedient. These are
some of the early signs of the parenting style that the parents to a child approach. Parenting style
affects a child into their adult life. Various parenting styles have their positives and negatives.
Some parents can successfully combine parenting styles to enhance the child’s wellbeing in
consideration of the child’s growth and development. Two parenting styles that are commonly
used include the authoritarian parenting style and the permissive parenting style. This paper
compares and contrasts the authoritarian and permissive parenting styles; giving some insight on
the effect of parenting styles on the development of children between the ages of 2 and 15 years,
and also showing how parenting styles modifications can improve parenting outcomes.
