OPIOID ABUSE AMONG ADOLESCENTS

3

Abstract
Misuse of opioids links to health impacts, including morbidities and mortalities, and the
rate of occurrence of opioid use is significantly high among adolescents. The purpose of this
review is to synthesize the current understanding of adolescent opioid misuse to inform
prevention measures. The research aims at establishing the association between safe storage and
disposal of opioids and adolescent access to prescription and non-prescription opioids. The
research employs a qualitative meta-analytic approach to review and draws findings from
primary journals. The findings of this investigation indicate a strong relationship between parent
opioid use and adolescent access and use. The research recommends home-based approaches for
primary adolescents opioid use intervention involving parents with prescribed opioids. The
research also recommends continuous teaching to remind parents with prescribed opioids on the
safe storage and suitable disposal of the unwanted opioid to minimize adolescent access.

Introduction

including morbidities and mortalities. The rates of mortalities linked to opioids have tripled since
1999 (Hudgins, Porter, Monuteaux, & Bourgeois, 2019). Opioids are a class of drugs, including
synthetic opioids, pain alleviators, and illegal substance-heroin. Naturally, these substances exist
in the opium poppy plant, and ache alleviators are legally available by prescription, such as
morphine, codeine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone. While prescription opioids (POs) are useful in
the management of persons with chronic pain, their mechanism of action makes them highly
addictive. They act in the nervous system to generate pain relief and feelings of pleasure, which
increases the likelihood of misuse and abuse. Thes...
