Introduction
Nurses play a critical role in the healthcare sector as they offer care to patients and take
on leadership roles at health facilities in the health system and other organizations. Nurses have
always exuded professionalism and appear to be calm and have courtesy in health care settings
(Huston, 2017).
Conversely, these practitioners, like all in society, face personal challenges at work and
away from work that may lead them to turn to substance use and abuse, especially drugs and
alcohol. In the study, Lockhart and Davis (2017) observe that between ten and fifteen percent of
the over four million nurses are impaired or recovering from substance use disorder or addiction
to alcohol. The study also notes that the number of nurses suffering from impairment identified
and reported to state nursing boards across the nation has been on the rise. The authors note, for
instance, that in 2016 over nine hundred cases of substance and alcohol violations were reported
to the Pennsylvania State nursing board. Impaired nurses suffer from substance use and addiction
to alcohol, making it difficult for them to discharge their duties and maintain safety standards for
their patients. As such, this essay addresses the issue and why state legislators should consider it
in their deliberations.

Nurses are an integral part of an effective and efficient health care system that delivers
quality outcomes to patients, especially in safety and reduced medical errors, which can lead to
loss of lives. Besides, recent statistics continue to show that over ten percent of nurses are
impaired or recovering from the impairment. These figures imply that patients accessing services

from the nurses are at an increased risk of getting harm not because of their fault but because of
