Question Description

I’m working on a English exercise and need support.

Prologue – what was the traumatic or profound event in Einstein’s life that set the tone for what was to follow?

How does the event compare to the events of the other four scientists we have studied?

Veni – how did Einstein come to be interested in the subject of light?

In the mid-1850s, it was believed that “the future belongs to the human sciences”(book page 219).How did these men contribute to that belief?

  • Charles Darwin (1859)
  • Thomas Huxley and Herbert Spencer
  • Friedrich Nietzsche
  • Francis Galton

How did the eugenics movement impact the Einstein family?

What object piqued young Einstein’s interest when he was five years old and why?How did his Uncle Jakob describe him?

Describe Einstein’s early struggles in grammar and high school.

What is Einstein’s ‘shrinking factor’?

Describe his high school/college educational experiences.

(page 231)In the 1900s science was entering the next 150 years full of confidence:the four major elements – Earth, Air, Fire, Water – are now thriving scientific disciplines.

What other two loose ends were tied up in 1896 and 1897?What major element was left out?

Vidi – what was going on in the world at that time?

How had science merged space, time, matter, and energy into a coherent theory by 1899 when Einstein was born? Why was the topic of light so baffling?

From Aristotle to Newton, how did science explain light? Now enter three scientists who added to that theory. What did each of the following contribute?

  • Thomas Young
  • James Clerk Maxwell
  • Heinrich Hertz

A new dilemma – how do light waves travel through the vacuum of space? How did the following contribute to that dilemma?

  • Albert Michelson and Edward Morley
  • Michael Faraday
  • Armand Fizau

Prologue
The dramatic event in Einstein's life that sets the tone of what is to follow
In his early life, Albert Einstein preferred spending his time alone; he hated going to class to listen
to boring lectures. He was never comfortable with spending time with his classmates, either. He
once got an opportunity to go for a trip to the Swiss Alps in Switzerland. During the trip, Einstein
got the chance to explore some theories he was trying to figure out in class. As they climbed the
Alps, Albert experienced a near-death experience where he almost fell while climbing the Alps.
Despite the experience, Albert never seemed troubled; he focused on grasping a better
understanding of light. It was following developments by Maxwell that his urge to grasp a better
understanding of light was increased. Albert wanted to explore various concepts on light to
understand how light's properties were related to those of waves that generated both electricity and
magnetism (Guillen, 1995). It is the experience during the trip that set the precedence that was to
happen later in his life.
How does the event compare to the events of the other four scientists we have studied?
The event experienced by Einstein is closely related to other scientists such as Rudolf Clausius,
who had to go through suffering before he could come up with his invention. Clausius suffered
following the death of his wife, and this shaped his invention later on the second la...
