1. Pareto Chart

Pareto charts are graphical techniques used to rank business processes from the most to
the least frequent with an objective of directing resources on the aspects that produce the greatest
overall implication. In the data provided the Pareto chart is as shown below.

The common thing among states with longer lengths of stay is that they have comparatively
higher number of hospitals, and staffed beds. The total revenue among these states is also high.
2. Histogram
A histogram is a graphical representation of the distribution of data. It can also be used to
test the normality of data by observing the height of the bars. The histogram produced by the
Ch04Problems.xls file shows the distribution of the lengths of stay in different hospitals. It can
be observed that the data is approximately normal. The mean and standard deviation of the
length of stay is 1.6730 and 0.2469. The interval (1.179, 2.1668) represents 2 standard deviations
of the mean. If the 2-standard deviation of the mean criterion id used to determine hospitals with
extremely high or low lengths of stay, then all the hospitals whose stay is less than 1.179 or

higher than 2.1668 should be reviewed. Clearly the hospitals that should be reviewed in DRG143
case are Monongahela Valley, Clearfield, Somerset Center Health, St Joseph's/Philadelphia,
Canonsburg General, Ellwood City, Hanover, and UPMC South Side. The histogram is as shown

3. Scatter Plot
A scatter plot is used to represent individual numerical values. It is useful in assessing the
relationship between two variables. The scatter plot below displays the relationship between total
discharges and total patient days.

The relationship can be described as positive linear because as the total number of patient days
increases the number of discharges increase. It is linear because the points approximately follow
a straight line.
4. Scatter Plot
The scatter plot shown below shows the relationship between the number of cases and the
length of stay.

Since the points do not follow any definite pattern, the two variables (number of cases and the
length of stay) are uncorrelated and are both independent. It implies that one variable cannot be
used to predict the value of the other variable.
6. Process Distribution Check Sheet / Defect Factor Check Sheet
A process Distribution Check sheet is used to represent the distribution of data. The
check sheet below displays the distribution of late arrivals. The total number of times

transporters arrived between 1 to 5, 6 to 10, 11-15 minutes late was 4, 3, 5 respectively. None of
the transporters arrived later than 15 minutes.

The defect factor sheet is used to determine whether the distribution of the data was due to any
specific factor. In the sheet below, the total number of times transporter A, B, C, D, and E were
late are 1, 5, 2, 3, 1 respectively. Late arrivals cannot be blamed on one transporter but
transporter B and D with 5 and 3 late arrivals respectively should be reviewed because they are
responsible for most late arrivals.

7. Multi-voting Process
Multi-voting is a process of decision making that aims at taking into considerations all the
opinions of different individuals and then narrows down to a smaller list of possibilities. This method
ensures that an opinion or project favored by every team member is selected. If the 3 votes of each
member were considered then to total rankings for projects A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I are

4,4,2,6,2,1,4,3, and 4 respectively. The project with the highest total rank is Project D and should be
selected.
