Compare and Contrast essay on two writing pieces

Unformatted Attachment Preview

You will write a 3 to 4 page essay on one of the following topics. Make sure you mention the title and author of the works you're writing about, and have a clear thesis before you begin. You have the freedom to focus on your own ideas regarding these themes so feel free to research outside material to support your premise. However, make sure you refer to the literature through examples and quotes throughout the essay. Also, follow the proper format rules for this paper and come up with a creative title. 1) Compare and contrast “Commitments” by Essex Hemphill and “Queer Theory According to My Grandmother” by Richard Blanco. Think about the struggles the narrators are going through and show the differences and similarities in both situations. Focus on the notions of homosexuality and gender identity, 2) Compare and contrast “My Son the Fanatic" by Hanif Kureishi and "From Teenage Angst to Jihad” by Abdelkader Benali. Contemplate the idea of why there are those who willingly give up our Western ideals of freedom to become indoctrinated in religious fanaticism. Focus on the many reasons why this happens to those who are otherwise privileged to live in a free and fair society and why others simply choose moderation instead of extremism when it comes to religion. 3) Compare and contrast the documentary "The Human Robot” by Ron Van Hatten and "Can Robots Become Conscious" by Kenneth Chang. Think about the possibilities of having a robot society where artificial intelligence is no longer so artificial. Think about the ways our world would change both negatively and positively, and what our responsibilities would be in a world where robots become a part of our lives. 4) Compare and contrast "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" by Ray Carver. Contemplate the convoluted ideas of love in both pieces and how the characters display their dysfunction. Think about what these pieces tell us about love, marriage, staying together, abuse and obsession. 5) Compare and contrast “The Rich Brother" by Tobias Wolff and “Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin. Focus on the similarities and differences between the brothers in both stories with regard to their status in life, their personalities, where they grew up and their race. Keep the idea of being 'my brother's keeper in mind. 6) Compare and contrast the poems "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden and "Forgiving My Father" by Lucille Clifton. Reflect upon what the speakers reveal about their fathers and their characters. What are the similarities and differences that exist in these poems when it comes to both the speakers' attitudes and how the fathers are portrayed?

those subjects that they have a lot of knowledge about. Poets and authors use aspects of life like
family roles, life experiences and romances as a basis for their works. A father has great effect
on his child’s perception of love and life whether he acknowledges it or not. In this essay, the
poems “Forgiving My Father” by Lucille Clifton and “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert
Hayden are discussed.
The two poems exhibit various differences and similarities. One of the similarities is that
both poems feature the role of a father which is an important family role. They portray poor
relationship between the narrator and his father in that the narrator of “Those Winter Sundays”
poem did not appreciate his father’s efforts of warming their house during winter. Similarly, the
