SOCIAL INJUSTICE AND DISCRIMINATION IN MODERN SOCIETY
Social Injustice and Discrimination in Modern Society
Introduction
The intersections of religion, sexuality, class, gender, and race can produce and propagate
systems of oppression and domination. Oppression exists when any institution, entity, or individual
inequitably distributes resources, refuses to share power, imposes ethnocentric culture, or
maintains unresponsive institutions towards an individual or institution. Despite the current novel
coronavirus (COVID 19) epidemic when people should band together, these forms of oppression
have continued to be witnessed in our social institutions, including schools, health facilities, and
at the workplace. An excellent example of such social injustice I have recently experienced
occurred a few weeks after the spread of deadly virus COVID-19. A particular firm located in my
home town started reducing its workforce, both skilled and non-skilled labor. A parent to one of
my closest friends was terminated alongside other African American staff members. I am going to
use more personal examples and experiences to prove how our system and social institutions have
been affected by this monster of discrimination based on people's race, ethnicity, sexual
orientation, social class, age, among others.
Classism, imperialism, sexism, racism, heterosexism, ableism, and ageism are all linked
because they are involved in a negative prejudgment with the purpose of maintaining control and
power. With the controlled power comes injustice, which significantly affects the economy. This
system of oppression, in turn, brings about injustice in our society, which is closely linked to an
increase in crime rate. The essay focuses on the sensation of various or intersectional forms of
discrimination and social injustice faced by many individuals in the United State based on their
race, gender, or ethnicity. The joint effects of racism and gender discrimination, in particular on
migrants, immigrants, indigenous or minority groups, and impoverished people all over the

country. The result has devastating consequences for their full enjoyment of equal and fundamental
human rights in both the public and private institutions and how they can control and destroy lives.
Robin DiAngelo, in his book "White Fragility," defines racism as systematic oppression
and discrimination of individuals based on their belonging to a particular race or people (DiAngelo,
2018). A race is a grouping of humans based on collective physical or social qualities into sets
usually viewed as distinct by culture. Racism is different from individual prejudice because it
requires the possession of genuine power in society. On the other hand, discrimination is a wrong,
and negative attitude focused on an outgroup because of real or purported physical or cultural
characteristics.
Discrimination based on race has been a significant problem that the United States has been
facing from as early as the 16th century with a continuing decline from the vigorous, violent
assaults, public humiliation, and killings. The reduction piloted to the increase in different and new
ways to express other surreptitious humiliating, inert, and new labels of racism. Ever since, the
customs of racism have changed, so the targets and drive. The studies have failed to accurately
prove the origin of racism. Still, it is believed it emanated from the ignorance of some individuals
who believe in having superior powers and control over minority groups of the society. Racism
within a smaller group remains approvable as a part of their culture and may serve as a way to find
peace with it. Still, the problem arises when another sectional or a lesser group puts racism into
their hands without the reality of practicality and danger it possesses. The uninformed and ignorant
practices racism, which does not help anyone since ignoring the fact that everyone's distinctiveness
will not solve the problem. Still, acceptance of the individuality and uniqueness of each person,
including their culture, will help everyone and those who fought for this equality and civil rights
in the United States like Martin Luther King Jr.
