I. Part 1: The Problem
A. Chapter 5 in the book, ‘Gender, Power, and Violence: Responding to Sexual and Intimate
Partner Violence in Society Today’ explores the sexual abuse problems in modern prisons.
B. Chapter five is entitled ‘Prisons’ and describes how culture does not accept the deviant acts
like rape, and all forms of violence in prisons.
C. Events explained in the chapter happen in US prisons and have an impact on the well-being of
contemporary society in America.
D. The lack of an acceptable set of norms in US prisons makes people develop negative
perceptions of people of color.
E.Prison leaders in the US should address human rights and focus on activities that promote
justice in prisons.
F. According to Hattery and Smith (2019), juvenile incarceration affects youths differently based
on their race. The Hispanics are incarcerated differently.
G. Black men in US prisons are locked down in restricted structures for at least twenty three
hours every day.
II. Structures that facilitate GBV
A. Gender-based violence in prisons can be handled through the implementation of two pilot
programs whereby the needs of prisoners from all races are addressed.

B. More so, in-prison programs that involve the fight for equality and opposing sex segregation
in prison are required in the US.
C. Gender-based violence acts like a tool to solve the issues that affect prisoners in US prisons.
D. The system of justice is implemented by the US criminal justice system.
III. Part 2: What can be done
A. The social-ecological model, when applied in the context of US prisons, will help improve the
status of prisoners.
B. Public and institution policy will help address the uncertainties in different prisons.
C. The environment in US prisons is rapidly changing.
D. The public policy supports a multidisciplinary approach in solving problems prisoners face in
different centers.
E. Such an approach will guide complex decisions in prisons, like placing men guards in prisons
dominated by women.
F. The ecological model addresses the need to consider the culture of people.
G. It is recommendable for the prison environment to maintain justice and fairness.
H. The individual KSA’s will enhance the interpersonal relationships in prisons.
I. The stabilization of social networks in prison will depend on the effort by security guards to
support peaceful co-existence in prisons.
