This week's discussion assignment will be a review of the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas chapters 1-6. Write a brief answer for the questions below (Make sure your answers are in complete sentences.) You are only required to answer the questions - do not respond to other posts.

1. When is Frederick’s birthday? What sort of relationship did he have with his parents? What are the “advantages” for the slave owner to have mixed race children? What did Frederick see happen to his Aunt Hester? Why did this happen?

2. What do the slaves receive each year as their clothing “allowance”? What is the monthly food allowance for slaves? What do children who do not work in the fields receive as clothing allowance? What were the living conditions like for the slaves? Why did the slaves sing? How did this affect Douglass?

3. What is the penalty for telling the truth about the conditions that slaves endure? What is ironic about the slaves when they talk about their masters with other slaves?

4. Describe the type of overseer Mr. Gore was. What happened with Demby? What other acts of murder happened to slaves? What happened to the people who killed them?

5. What news did Douglass receive that excited him? Why? What are his new duties? What was different about meeting Mrs. Sophia Auld?

6. What does Mrs. Auld expose Frederick to? Why is she so nice to him at first? What important “lesson” does he learn from Mr. Auld? How is life different for the slaves in Baltimore?

Final Answer

Hi! Here's my final output. Please let me know if this is enough. I can do revisions should there be a need. 😊

1. When is Frederick’s birthday? What sort of relationship did he have with his
parents? What are the “advantages” for the slave owner to have mixed race
children? What did Frederick see happen to his Aunt Hester? Why did this
happen?
Frederick had no idea when his birthday was, as there was no written document to
to verify it. However, he could estimate his age because he once heard his master say
that during 1835, he was around seventeen years old. He did not have any type of
relationship with his parents; his mother’s name was Harriet Bailey, and he had a
white father, whom he hadn’t met or known. There were opinions that his father was
his master, but he didn’t have the means to know if it was true or not. He was taken
away from his mother as an infant, and she died when he was about 7 years old. This
did not give them the chance to form a bond, as the natural affection between child

slave women followed the condition of their mothers, and this meant that slave
owners had more slaves. As the mixed race children were a glaring sign for the wives
of the slave owners, this would compel them to sell the children to other slave owners.
Frederick saw his Aunt Hester be brutally whipped by his old master, Captain
Anthony. She was stripped naked, with her hands bound by rope and tied to a hook on
a joist. She was then whipped using a heavy cowskin until her back was full of blood,
and no matter how much she pleaded, prayed, shrieked, or cried, he did not stop. He
only stopped due to exhaustion. Hester was not allowed to go out in the evenings, and
most especially, not to be caught in the company of Ned Roberts, a young man who
was giving her attention. She was caught doing both of these things, which was w...
