Metropolitan I.T. Infrastructures Semester Project: Part 1 – Preliminary Information In this phase of the semester project, we will focus on getting started with a team of students towards the development of a formal report/proposal addressing the needs of a particular area. This will be from the perspective of a startup company proposing technological solutions to an area’s problems. Once your team is established, choose a particular area within the Baltimore Metropolitan area or any other metropolitan areas of your choice and identify a major issue within that area in which a technological solution could help substantially alleviate such issue. You may identify more than one issue in a metropolitan area; but in order to be focused and efficient in your work, those issues need to be related within the scope of your team expertise. Your team will need to act as a business in contract with the city officials of a metropolitan area that will propose the solution to the identified issue. Once your team, the area, and issue have been identified, your group will need to submit the following information in the form of a proposal. I would strongly encourage that each point contain substantial detail, explanation and support. This document will serve as a basis for later parts of the project proposal. A sample outline below is just one of many outline possibilities of how to summarize the proposal; but, at least should include the following information. It is up to the group how to present the information, but all points must be addressed. During each phase of the semester project we will be correcting, updating and expanding the document moving forward to the final product that will be due at the end of the semester which the group will present to the class. Outline: 1. Cover sheet 2. Executive summary 3. Table of Contents 4. The Business I. Prior Experiences II. Description of business, customer value proposition and competitive advantages, if any. Structure of your business III. Market Opportunity IV. Competition V. Logo (and logo feedback) 5. Technical Section 6. Management Section 7. Cost Section 8. References Cover Sheet, Executive Summary and Table of Contents The first page of the report is a cover sheet that includes the proposed business name of your company, proposed project name, target location, and the names all members. Be sure to list the group leader first (which will need to be decided by your group). The second page of the report is a one-page executive summary that summarizes each of the main elements of your business and goals and why your company can solve these problems. In straightforward prose, you should answer the following questions: • What sort of company is it? • Where is your targeted area/ what are the general problems you hope to solve? • What are the product/services/solutions that you will provide to solve the identified problems, and what's special about your approach? The first paragraph of the executive summary should be a compelling description of company's mission-- one that grabs readers' attention and encourages them to read further. I. THE BUSINESS A. DESCRIPTION OF THE BUSINESS In this section, provide a detailed description of the business. Include your products/services/ solutions that will solve these problems, as well as a thorough description of what makes your business unique. The description of the business should have two main sections: the first section describes the business, while the second section describes the product /service/solutions you will be offering. The description of the business should clearly identify the business's goals and objectives (its “mission”). When describing the business, generally you should also explain: Include a description of what makes the business unique and how or why its unique aspects will appeal to the city or area that you are targeting. Emphasize any special features that you feel will appeal to customers and explain how and why these features are appealing. B. MARKET OPPORTUNITY (Preliminary) In this section of the report, you should demonstrate to potential investors that you have done your “homework” and know the area you are seeking to help. An analysis of the market opportunity includes a discussion of the area’s characteristics and trends, projected growth (or decline), resident behavior, data, trends, complementary products/services, barriers of entry, and so on. You should talk about how similar products/services/solutions have done in the area (if they exist or have been tried before). C. THE COMPETITION It is important to know your competitors. If no competition exists, explain in detail why this may be the case. Questions like these can help you: 1. Who are your nearest direct competitors? 2. Are there other companies or initiatives / projects that are proposing the same solutions? 3. What are their strengths and weaknesses? 4. How does their product or service differ from yours? D. LOGO Design 1. As part of the initial “marketing” plan, also include a sample logo that will be used to represent your company. 2. Survey at least 10 people about your designed logo and report on their response in this document. If you change your logo design based on their gathered responses, include both the old and new design and explain why the changes were made. Report on the comments from those evaluating your logo. Additional Notes: Please read the following checklist and make sure that you have taken them into consideration. You’re a group of creative and innovative engineers proposing a project topic (a solution with use of technology) to a customer which could be the city officials of Baltimore City (or any other Metro areas) or a corporation. Your proposed solution will help citizens, businesses, or government in achieving the ultimate goals in Future Cities. Remember, you’re putting efforts toward winning a project in a competitive market from your potential customer to become a contractor. You could think big to win a big project in mind. If it’s needed to complete that project, you’re not just a company of 4-5 engineers, you’re presenting for a big company of any size with imaginary good reputation in the field. As it is discussed in project management lecture PowerPoint, make sure to address the three areas of a good wining proposal, Technical section, Management section, Cost section. Please stay focused in one area/aspect of technology. You’re NOT offering several unrelated technologies to a customer in one single proposal. Narrow down your focus and write more in detail just about one topic/solution/area in your proposed Information Technology solution to your customer. The sample outline in the project requirements document is just part of many outline possibilities of how to summarize the report; but, at least, make sure to address those areas. The expectation number of pages with actual contexts (excluding Cover Page, Table of Contents, References) must be somewhere between 10-12 pages since it requires in-depth description of your proposed project. Citation and references are very important and crucial if you use someone else's work. In general, when you use someone else's work, you need to make sure to cite the work properly. You may use either MLA style or APA style in your references. Otherwise, it will be considered as PLAGIARISM and will result a grade of ZERO for the group. ARC Roads Systems Insertion of Active Charging Lanes for Electric Powered Cars Baltimore Metro Area Highways 1 Arc Roads We are Arc Road Systems, a company founded in 2012 and headquartered in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area in Maryland. Arc Roads manufactures and installs electrically charged roads for high traffic systems such as highways and interstates. Our systems will provide a solution for electric vehicles by allowing a longer range for traveling on roads. With more efficient electric vehicle range, more people will make the switch to electric vehicles for the environmental benefits they provide. With electric vehicle becoming the norm for transportation in the future, pollution will drop from the decrease burning of fossil fuels and decrease of noise pollution caused by combustion engines. Arc Roads are a network of roads which are powered by electric generators that are in large facilities, much like electric plants that power our metropolitan area. These facilities use underground cables to route the power generated to the roads that is distributed to electric vehicles. As electric vehicles travel along Arc Roads, the internal batteries of the electric vehicles will receive electric current through electric induction, transferring the current to the battery and charging it to give more range for electric vehicles. The use of Arc Roads will not be a direct cost to users like with fossil fuels. Costs associated with the design, construction and maintaining the systems will be covered by national taxes paid to the government. With this in place, manufacturers of automobiles will see a unique approach to creating change for future transportation by providing the infrastructure to accommodate the technology as it meets its potential. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS PRIOR EXPERIENCES .........................................................................................5 Holland (2013) .............................................................................................................................................................. 5 Canada (2013) .............................................................................................................................................................. 5 England (2014) ............................................................................................................................................................. 5 Los Angeles (2015) ....................................................................................................................................................... 5 BUSINESS DESCRIPTION ...................................................................................6 General Company Description ................................................................................................................................... 6 Arc Road System’s Workforce ................................................................................................................................... 6 Mission Statement........................................................................................................................................................ 6 Vision Statement .......................................................................................................................................................... 6 Industry Description.................................................................................................................................................... 7 Product and Services ................................................................................................................................................... 7 Unique Aspect of Arc Road Systems .......................................................................................................................... 7 Benefits for the Customer ........................................................................................................................................... 7 Form of Business.......................................................................................................................................................... 8 TECHNICAL SECTION ........................................................................................8 1.
