GROCERY STORE ASSIGNMENT Visit an ethnic grocery store and research how the foods found at the grocery are a staple for their cultural diet. Consider the history of the country: famine, coastal region, destruction, wars, and country economics. Explain how the cultural group may utilize the food pyramid in meal planning. Discuss your findings based on the RESEARCH YOU HAVE DONE PRIOR to visiting the grocery; be sure to share what you learned at the grocery that agreed (or disagreed) with your findings. Grading will be based on the level of detail you provide in your submission to the following: • • • • • • • Did you visit a grocery store and document the name and location? You will not receive maximum points if you visit the international food aisle of a traditional grocery store. You are instructed to visit an ethnic food store. What culture did you select? The History of the Republic of Guatemala
The Republic of Guatemala, located in Central America, is bordered by Mexico on
the west, Belize on the northeast, Honduras and El Salvador on the southeast, and the Pacific
Ocean on the south. It has a population of approximately 16 million (Congressional Research
Service, 2019). Guatemala is a developing nation. The 36-year civil war that ended in 1996
paved the way for economic growth through foreign investments. Thus, the nation has
experienced gradual economic growth over the years. As of 2017, Guatemala had a GDP of
US$75.62 Billion and a GNI Per Capita of $4,060. Agriculture accounted for 13.3%, industry
23.4%, and services, 63.2% of the nation’s overall GDP (Congressional Research Service,
2019). Nonetheless, poverty and inequality remain high. The World Food Program (2019)
indicates that 60% of the population lives on less than $2 a day in Guatemala.
Guatemala has never had a severe famine. However, since 2018, it has witnessed
extensive dry seasons that have severely affected the livelihoods of subsistence farmers who
rely on rain to farm their lands. Deforestation, poor soil conditions, small chunks of land, and
limited access to credit exacerbate the situation. Guatemala happens to have one of the highest
under 5 malnutrition prevalence rates. Approximately 46.5% of children under five years
countrywide are stunted (World Food Program, 2019). Such situations imply people will have
a limited nutrition diet.
Guatemala’s Pacific coast, “La Costa Sur”, is a low-lying coastal strip. The region has
fertile volcanic soils ideal for farming but they are undergoing degradation due to deforestation
and soil erosion.
The Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), is the most notable war in the country.
Approximately 200,000 persons lost their lives out of which 83% were indigenous Maya. The

government forces were responsible for at least 90% of human rights violations (Schirmer,
2010). The war disestablished the country for years. Besides war, the Guatemalan government
is marred with graft and impunity. Over two decades after the peace accord and more than 59%
of the population lives in poverty while children suffer stunted growth (World Food Program,
2019). A lot needs to be done to improve the country’s situation.
Part of the Central American Dry Corridor Part rests in central Guatemala. Meaning,
50-90% of crops planted within this region is lost due to poor rainfall (World Food Program,
2019). For that rea...
