It is extremely challenging for low-cost airline carriers to realize profitability. Out of 40
budget carriers launched in Europe between 1992 and 2012, only 10 were successful. Airlines
that have excelled, including Ryanair and Easyjet, have done so by ensuring their planes are in
the air for longer periods (Chen & Pawlikowski, 2015).
1. What are the biggest challenges Norweigan experienced in trying to expand its
airline across the globe?
In their pursuit for global expansion, Norwegian Air faces stiff competition from shorthaul carriers such as the dominant Ryanair and Easyjet which is a big challenge. This expansion
was also affected by fear of pilots striking due to Norwegian’s plan to outsource its flight staff
globally. Another challenge emanated from the attempt by American airlines to block entry of
Norwegian flights into the country from fear of foreign competition. Norwegian’s model
attracted stiff opposition from US airlines and labor groups who viewed it as a malicious attempt
