Description

The Introduction:

National parks can be a controversial topic, so make sure that you keep your post and your replies respectful!

National Parks can be defined as an entity that: “preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world” (NPS, 2018).

We all have probably enjoyed a National Park, and if you would like more information, take time to look around: https://www.nationalparks.org/

The Objective:

To understand our impact in National Parks, and what we should be doing to preserve them.

For This Forum:

  • Find a Park: https://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm
  • Choose the state in which you reside. There are a lot of parks, so make sure you choose one that is different than your classmates, and use it in the title of your post.
  • Discuss:
  • How large is the park?
    • What types of wildlife are found there?
    • What kind of recreation is present?
  • Have you ever visited in person?
  • What are the ecological advantages to the park?
  • What are the economic advantages to the park?

Good Morning Class,

I hope all of you are doing well this week, I know my family is healthy thus far, so I can’t complain to much – other than still having to go into the office a few times a week. Anyways, to business…. The park that I chose for this week is one that I actually have not been to (I was trying something new): Biscayne. Biscayne Nation Park is approximately 172,971 acres, which includes not only some of the Florida Key’s northing islands, but is almost home to one of the largest coral reefs in the world. There is a handful of recreational things to do, such as: snorkeling, sailing, paddling, fishing, walking around the islands, boating, cruises and a variety of different experiences based on what type of activity you chose. There are some great ecological advantages to the park, one being the preservation of many coral species. Further there is a handful of exotic plants that have been found within the park, with roughly 20 that are pest species, which help balance things out. Some of the economic advantages to the park from what I’ve seen is that since it is a desirable place to visit (including the major surrounding cities), it brings tourist and scientist there for both work and leisure – whether it be for some sort of study or to just enjoy the preserved area. Good stuff this week, it was fun learning about a new place within my state! I hope ya’ll have a good one!

Best,

Mickey

Zion National Park is in southwestern Utah, which is the state that I live in. The park is a dry environment and it’s size is 149, 597 acres or 229 square miles. “Zion is home to over 78 species of mammals, 291 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 8 species of fish (Cuthbert & Yogerst, 2019).” Mountain Lions, which is my research topic for this class reside here as well. Mule deer are well populated here and are typically the largest mammal you will encounter in the park. There are a lot of recreation activities available here, such as backpacking, bicycling, bird watching, camping, canyoneering, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking and many, many more. As far as me visiting, Zion National Park, I have only driven through it, but I have never actually visited the park for recreational purposes. I do plan on visiting it this summer. I would say for the ecological advantages would be that, when it rains, all of the usually dried up tributaries as well in addition to the canyon low spots fill up with water which creates more water sources for animals. This also supports all the fish and other water life in the park. According to the Natural Resources Report on National Park Spending Effects, in 2018, there was more than 4.3 million visitors who spent more than $245,000 at the park. Additionally, in 2018, Zion National Park supported the economy by proving more than 4,000 jobs throughout the park.

Hello, Everyone
I decided to discuss Joshua Tree National Park because it the park I like the most. Essentially,
Joshua Tree National Park is a place where the Mojave and Colorado desert ecosystem comes
together, and it covers an area of about 800, 000 acres. This park has numerous varieties of
plants and animal species that make the park their habitat. For instance, during the daytime, you
can see types of animals such as lizards, birds, and squirrels since they are more active in the
daytime. Similarly, during th...
