Dunbar defines the mask as a tool to express the identity of an individual or group. The
information in ‘We Wear the Mask’ describes that black Americans hide their real characters
when interacting with white people to avoid discrimination issues after the civil war. Information
in 'We Wear the Mask’ relates to Charles Chesnutt’s ‘The Passing of Grandison’ because they
both describe the hostility of slavery that made African Americans develop a unique character.
The character they developed involved supporting communication between people of color and
avoiding exposure of secrets to the whites. African Americans also developed feelings after they
were oppressed for long (Chesnutt, 1899). In the discussion, an explanation is made on the slave
stereotype based on information in 'We Wear the Mask' and 'The Passing of Grandison.'
