CANDIDATES FOR THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
The United States presidential election is slowly approaching, and numerous candidates
from both sides of the political divide have thrown their hats in the ring, hopping the American
electorate will endorse them as their next president (Leonhardt, 2019). According to Amadeo
(2019), only two are front runners and the major political candidates in this year’s presidential
elections. The two are the current President Donald Trump, who will be seeking re-election,
and finally Bernie Sanders, a Senator from Vermont. Since all of the have occupied a political
office at one point in their life, the policies they put in place and their actions will huge
determinants of whether the American populous will vote them in as the next person to run the
United States of America (Leonhardt, 2019).
Bernie Sanders is regarded as a strong candidate to occupy the oval office due to his
past achievements in the political arena. He is currently a Senator, representing the state of
Vermont, a job he has held since the year 2007, before which he was a United States
Representative from 1991 until 2007. Sanders had managed to withstand the political party
wave and maintain his independence, albeit he had a brief hiatus in 2016 when he sought to
run for president under the auspices of the Democratic Party. He lost at the party's nomination
stage to then-candidate Hillary Clinton.
During his time in office, Sanders has gained popularity due to the numerous strengths
he has exhibited while acting as either a senator or a Vermont District house representative
(Leonhardt, 2019). He has been able to adopt an approach centered on economic progression.
It is a different path compared to his competitors who have embraced a little of everything but
mostly social and cultural matters (Leonhardt, 2019). He has continuously advocated for an
increase in the minimum wage paid to American workers, an aspect that has endeared him to
the general public. It is one aspect that has shown his willingness to fight for the labor rights
of the American people (Leonhardt, 2019). He is also a strong advocate for economic equality,
where he has continuously called for increased taxation for the wealthy people in American
society. He anchors his belief on the fact that taxing higher amounts to such people will allow
the government to provide better services to those at the lower echelons of the United States
economic paradigm (Leonhardt, 2019). In Congress, he pushed for the adoption of a healthcare
cover that is paid for by a single public entity and not handed out to private companies. His
belief is anchored on the notion that by doing this, the charges accompanying any treatment
accorded to Americans will be reduced and in the process, increasing access to medical
treatment (Leonhardt, 2019).
Critics have pointed out that one of the shortcomings associated with Bernie Sanders is
his inability to change (Leonhardt, 2019). They consider him as rigid and unwilling to adapt to
change. He has solely focussed on economic progression at...
