Description

Term Paper: The Service-Oriented Architecture

The Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) strategy allows businesses and organizations to offer their products and services to customers and trading partners using a standards-based integration protocol. Web Services depends on SOA for delivery. SOA uses Extensible Markup Language (XML) to exchange data and information to its products and services consumers. One of the SOA characteristics is that the integration is loosely coupled, thus simplifying integration.

Write an eight to ten (8-10) page paper in which you:

  1. Analyze five (5) ways in which SOA reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO).
  2. Examine five (5) ways in which using XML enables data and information exchange between clients and servers using Web Services in an SOA environment.
  3. Compare and contrast the loosely coupled architecture to a tightly coupled architecture in terms of TCO, maintenance, and implementation issues.
  4. Analyze three (3) advantages and three (3) disadvantages of using a standards-based integration strategy.
  5. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Executive Summary
Smart travelers are a company that deals with travels. Owing to a large number of
customers, the company is facing an overload in its manual storage systems. The company uses
manual methods such as booking receipts to serve its clients. Most of the clients lose such
critical receipts which interrupt the normal operation of the company. Customer records are not
secure in such places. With vandalism being a key issue in the locality, the company at times
finds most of their documents have been stolen. This inconveniences necessitated the need for
secure storage.
The company has extra problems in addition to vandalism. Most of the travelers’ records
are altered by some company employees to serve their personal gains. This alteration
compromises the key data values of Integrity, Availability, and confidentially (Olson, 2003). Any
data storage should be Available to the legitimate users when needed, be free from alteration and
manipulation and Accessible only to those allowed to gain access to it (Olson, 2003).
The company lacks a strong financial base to build a vast and secure electronic database.
The company has only been operational for two years and has not made humongous financial
gains. Sponsors are needed for the dream of this company come true. Lack of enough funds is
the key reason why this company is still struggling with the manual and secure storage systems.
The implementation of this project will benefit the customers in addition to the company.
A large number of customers have complained about the inefficiency of the old systems.
Customers are key to any business, and this is the reason the company is losing most of its
customers. The project is aimed at ensuring such inconveniences do not occur again. With the

aid of the project sponsor, the dream of Smart Travelers can be achieved. Good management is
needed to ensure that this project is well implemented.
