1. What is the key difference between Bandura’s social learning theory and behavioristic
theories? And, discuss one way the theories are similar.
The behavioristic theories that came before Bandura’s social learning theory mainly revolved
around conditioning. There were various ways this occurred, but a main idea that was common
among psychologists was that children learn through reward and punishment. Bandura did not
agree with their theories and instead proposed that children learn because of social learning.
Children are likely to learn from mimicking instead of punishment and reward. Another key
difference is that the behavioristic theories proposed that there were stages to developing,
Bandura did not agree and in her theory, there are no set and defined stages of cognitive
development. The theories do have one similarity however, they do believe that behavior is still
relatively passive.
