Original Post
The three major characters in the novel are Beatrice Prior, Tobias, and Jeanine. This is
because they are the ones that represent the most significant themes in the story. Beatrice Prior,
also Tris, is the narrator of the story and the main protagonist. She is gifted with high intelligence
and courage, although she is only sixteen years old. She embodies the title of the novel, and her
divergence means that she has multiple attributes and can fit in any of the five factions. In
training for initiation into the Dauntless faction, she performs excellently, beating all the other
initiates on many occasions. In one scene, the other recruits become jealous of her prowess¸ such
as Peter, Al, and Drew.
Tobias, also known as Four, is another important character in the novel. He is also
courageous and a skillful fighter. Like Tris, he is divergent, and this is evident in the story when
the tracking serum fails to put him and Tris in a trance to subconsciously execute the commands
of Jeanine, the evil leader of the Erudite faction. Tobias represents the theme of loyalty and true
friendship. He sticks with Tris at her worst times when her native faction is invaded and helps
her defeat the attackers. He also saved her life while they were still trainees in Dauntless, and
always defended and protected her.
Jeanine is also a significant character in the novel and the main antagonist. He is the
source of the chaos that ensues at the climax of the story. It is his idea to overthrow the
government of Abnegation and control the people. He has a high IQ, and this enables him to
create a serum to control the strong army of Dauntless to invade Abnegation.
