Swift argues that he has drafted a modest proposal that is aimed at making the leaders
take his plan in the mitigation of poverty in Ireland (Swift 610). However, I would state that the
major reason or objective why he wrote the essay is to ensure that children in Ireland have a
better life as well as a better upbringing. Another objective of his essay was to find out a better
way that could be used to make children and especially those from poor families, more useful.
This is due to the fact that in the essay, he states that anybody who would come up with a way of
making the children more beneficial would deserve to have his or her statue set up for being a
great preserver of the country.

a. The verbal irony used in the title of the essay is that the word “modest” used in the title
means “un-assumed.” However, he uses the word proposal to show that what he is
writing is just a proposed way of how things could be done. Therefore it is ironic that his
proposal is un-assumed.
