Abstract
Energy is an integral part of human life. Most industries across the world depend heavily
on energy to survive. In industrialized countries such as the United States, an individual is
estimated to consume 125,000 kilocalories of energy in supplementary energy in transportation,
industrial, domestic, among others. This implies that as countries industrialize and population
expands, there will be worldwide growing demand energy. Important to note, the world depends
upon renewable and renewable sources of energy for survival. Renewable sources of energy
include wind energy, solar, and electricity, while nonrenewable include nuclear energy and fossil
fuels such as petroleum and diesel; among others, Nonrenewable energy is scarce and hurt the
environment. Going into the future, there is a probable energy crisis. Petroleum is becoming
expensive and scarce, while its environmental impact is the leading cause behind global warming
that major climatic issue of modern times. On the other hand, nuclear installation, which has been
hailed to the source of energy in a couple of decades, will behave reached the end of their useful
life. The object of this paper is to determine the production costs of Switchgrass and other
cultivated crops, whether they can provide energy enough to replace fossil fuel.

Introduction

Over the years, the world has relied on nonrenewable sources of energy. For instance, the
united states have heavily depended on nuclear energy, coal, and crude oil as a significant source
of energy and fuel. For instance, according to the U.S Department of energy in the year 19,
becoming produced 3.4 billion barrels and imported 1.2 billion barrels. In the year 2004 and the
trends continue to increase, indicating high dependence on crude oil and high prices of oil products
has, which prompted made policymakers to re-examine how to use renewable sources of energy.
Also, petroleum products emit a high amount of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which
trap ray bouncing off the Earth's surface, leading to global warming. This effect has led to extreme
weather patterns that hurt human activities.Moreover, it will become scarce, and it estimated to be
depleted over time. Ethanol and alternative energy sources could help to replace more than 75%
of oil imports to the United States (Clemente, 2020). The good news is that new due to
technological advancement now, it is possible to refine crude oil into gasoline and diesel for use
in the automobile industry, making gasoline and diesel-powered vessel and vehicles major
transportation means across the world. Important further advancement technology has been
developed to convert grasses with high cellulose content into ethanol for use as a fuel source.
Ethanol produced from grass biomass is a cleaner fuel source than the currently used nonrenewable

Background information
Fossil fuels, coal, petroleum, and natural gas have been used as the primary source to drive
industries and automobiles globally. These fuels are found on the Earth's crust, and they were
formed millions of years ago by a natural process when organic matter from animals and plants
was subjected to high pressure and temperatures. According to British Petroleum (2008), these
types of fuels make up 88% of the energy consumed, where 35.6% for petroleum, 28.6% for coal,
and 23.8% for natural gas. Important to note about 40% percent of fossil fuels are converted into
electricity while the rest are then used in the transportation sector and other industrial and domestic
uses. This shows the exceptional dependability of fossil fuels s source of primary energy. However,
fossil fuels cannot be sustained, as explained below.
Fossil fuels are unequally distributed across the world. More than half of global significant
oil reserves, which would prove hard to displace, are located in the Middle East. Also, natural gas
is concentrated in particular areas. This leads to high transportation costs, which is reflected in
high oil prices—indicating that we depend on fossil fuels, which are not compatible with a stable
supply, which will prove costly.
Secondly, fossil fuels are nonrenewable, thus implying that they are irreplaceable. The
majority of these fuels were formed due to natural processes a million years ago. Also, they are
are scare and limited resources. For instance, petroleum that is a significant energy source in
industrialized nations is predicted to serve humanities for the next to centuries. Therefore we must

Fossil fuel Raw materials are scarce. Geologists and petroleum experts that curate the rate
of oil production 85 million barrel a day means that we only have a few to last our decades. Going
into the future, the cost will also increase because the oil well is becoming deep, which means
more cost of extraction. For instance, statistics from independent analyst reveals that In the midtwentieth century, the energy required to extract a barrel of petroleum was equivalent to around
1% of the contents of that barrel. Today, that cost has risen to between 10% and 15%, and when
the energy needed to extract a barrel of crude oil comes close to the power that the same barrel
could produce, no matter what its price, then it will have disappeared as a primary energy source.
However, it may continue to be useful, especially in the petrochemical industry, where it is used
to synthesize a multitude of compounds that are fundamental to almost all branches of industry
and agriculture (Carroll & Somerville,2009). At the current rate of consumption, proven petroleum
reserves will last about 40 more years, while those of natural gas will last around 60 years. Coal
reserves will last approximately a century and a half (British Petroleum 2008)
Impact on the environment
Combustion of fossil fuels, for instance, petroleum and diesel, releases a high amount of
carbon dioxide.CO2 is among the greenhouse gases that lead to global warming. Increases
consumption will mean more co2 will be released thus global warming which lead to severe
climatic conditions such extreme weather condition such increased temperatures, high rainfall
drought which will affect human activity and in extreme circumstances cause endanger social and
plants life. In summary, our actions are driven by fossil fuel; however, their negative impact on
the environment, such as global warming and limited supplies, means that we must look for better
and replaceable sources of energy.

Nuclear Energy
The generation of power using nuclear fission is as important as other primary sources,
such as fossil fuel. For instance in developed countries such as Europe where it accounts for up to
30% of electricity. This way of generating nuclear energy is essential because it does not depend
