Early and Middle Childhood Development
Physical Changes and Factors Influencing Those Changes
Tremendous physical changes in a child occur typically in the early childhood
development stages. During this development period, the child begins to lose the baby fat and
develop straighter and sleeker bodies with necessary stronger muscles significantly for playing
and working (Singh et al., 2016). The child's limbs and trunk grow longer, and abdominal
muscles that tighten the stomach appearance are formed. Between birth and the age of three, the
child doubles their height and quadruples their weight. The child body proportions shift and
become a toddler with a more balance adult appearance.
In middle childhood development, several changes are occurring in children and generally
characterized by considerable variations in child growth patterns. At this stage, children do not
grow at the same rate despite following the same basic developmental pattern. At the beginning
of this middle childhood stage, the child has acquired a more athletic appearance. Girls and boys
still have the same body appearance and shape if both sexes receive excellent medical attention
and adequate nutrition.
Physical development of children can be influenced both positively and negatively by
experimental and environmental factors such as sex, parental care, health and exercise and
hormones, hereditary, geographical influence, and also family influence. Nurture constitutes and
contributes more to the growth and development of the child.
Changes That Occur In the Brain and Nervous System
In the early development stage, the child's nervous system continues to develop and
undergoes some changes. The majority of the cell that makes the nervous system of the child
form prenatally (Kopala‐Sibley et al., 2020). The glial cells form rapidly during infancy through
