Drugs are recognized as substances used for various reasons among people. They could
be used for medical needs while others have become popular for recreational activities. The
government, over the years, realized that not every drug available to the community works
towards promoting its wellbeing, and thus imposed policies to help create a balance. Some of
these drugs have led to the creation of a vicious community due to things such as addiction and
crime. There was a need to try and curb every negative aspect associated with drug use and
identify the positives, thus the policies. The perspective that best describes the drug policies in
countries such as the United States would be the functionalism perspective. The functionalism
perspective believes that different parts of the community are established to work together to
create a healthy and united society.
The United States drug policies often put across the laws used to the detail every aspect
of drug use. These laws establish the drugs that are considered legal and those that are illegal.
