"The Autobiography of Malcolm X" by Malcolm X and Alex Haley
Published in 1965, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" resulted from teamwork between
Alex Haley a journalist and Malcolm X a human rights activist. Haley contributed to the book by
coauthoring it after conducting a sequence of in-depth interviews from 1963 to 1965 when
Malcolm X was assassinated. The Autobiography is a narrative with a spiritual concession that
outlines the philosophy of Malcolm X on pan-Africanism and black nationalism. After Malcolm
X's death, Haley compiled the epilogue of the book. Haley described the collaboration between
him and Malcolm X as well as the events surrounding the life of Malcolm X. After being
published, a reviewer on The New York Times described the Autobiography as painful, brilliant,
and essential (Malcom & Haley, 1965). Furthermore, Historian Joh William Ward in 1967 stated
that it would become one of the most classic American Autobiographies. In 1998, it was named
