Health Medical
NU Current and Emerging Challenges in HIT Adoption SWOT Analysis Discussion Research Paper

Northwestern University

Question Description

I’m studying for my Health & Medical class and don’t understand how to answer this. Can you help me study?

The student is to write a term paper in APA format covering the (1) strengths, (2) weaknesses, (3) opportunities and (4) threats [SWOT Analysis]specific to one of five student learning objectives presented on the syllabus. In no particular order, available topics include:

1. Analyze the factors that affected the evolution of core health care information systems and technology,

2. Identify current and emerging challenges in HIS/HIT adoption,

3. Describe health informatics and discuss their importance in today's health care organizations,

4. Identify data analytics models used in health care and discuss the use of data in delivery evidence-based care, or

5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of established industry standards as they relate to data exchange, privacy, and information security.

THE EXPECTATIONS:

At minimum, this paper will meet the following parameters:

1) Must be in APA format. This is not to be taken lightly. Each of you should consider reviewing the Concise Guide to APA Style (Seventh Edition, ISBN 9781433832734) at your earliest opportunity.

2) Your paper must be written per APA style guide specifications and include the following components at minimum:

a. Title Page,

b. Table of Contents (use Microsoft Word’s Table of Contents tool),

c. Abstract,

d. Introduction,

e. Main body of paper separated by sections with the following subheads:

i. Strength

ii. Weaknesses

iii. Opportunities

iv. Threats

v. Conclusion

f. Bibliography

3) You should use six (including required text) or more references for this paper. I would prefer it if you use more.

a. It’s important that you put referenced material into your own words. TurnItIn’s originality percentage should be no higher than 10%.

THE PROCESS:

The sequence below is an illustrative example of how this assignment may be completed:

1) Each student should review the menu of topics and choose whichever one is most interesting.

2) Depending on the level of detail the chosen topic describes, the student should be specific enough to create a detailed written SWOT analysis that “checks off” all of the requirement boxes specific to this assignment. While the first topic presented on page one is a straightforward SWOT analysis, the second through fifth options are vague and require the author to be specific in what (s)he will review.

3) Seek out information on your chosen topic as it relates to:

a. Strengths: specific components that make it good.

b. Weaknesses: specific components that make it vulnerable.

c. Opportunities: specific areas in which it could grow, expand, and/or improve.

d. Threats: internal or external influences that interfere with its success.

4) The material you find should be put into essay format as assigned above. By the end of the term paper—summed up with the conclusion—the reader should understand the good and the bad in your chosen topic up to and including what it might look like in the future

Abstract
Despite the emerging technologies that result from Health Information Technology (HIT)
adoption, the healthcare industry faces multiple challenges. These challenges include how to
improve patient safety, minimize medical mistakes, operate efficiently, and provide secure
information. The healthcare sector is under pressure to accomplish the stated objectives while
reducing costs, maintaining patient privacy, and complying with the legal standards. Various
elements in the health industry and the adoption of IT are analyzed using a SWOT analysis
strategy. Strengths supporting IT adoption include improved patient safety and increased
efficiency. However, weaknesses include information integration inefficiencies and slow IT
implementation. Opportunities include internet usage and the establishment of a favourable
external environment. The health industry is faced with legal compliance and the high cost of IT
implementation threats.

Current and Emerging Challenges in HIT Adoption-Swot Analysis
Just like other industries, the healthcare industry faces various challenges. These
challenges include poor financial performance, lack of access to adequate information, increased
costs of operations, inadequate safety, and inefficiency, among others (Nardi et al., 2016). As a
result of these challenges, there is a need for change in service delivery in healthcare. Even if the
impact of the much-anticipated change is not well known, I believe Health Information
Technology (HIT) adoption is the catalyst. IT adoption in healthcare can improve quality, safety
as well as efficiency. HIT in healthcare does not only provide the industry with benefits; it comes
with new opportunities, weaknesses, and some threats.
Strengths
Improved Patient Safety
Patient safety is an essential element in the healthcare industry. As a result, improving
patient safety in all healthcare organizations is vital. The strategic plan to adopt IT in health care
can improve patient security facilitating quality care. Through IT adoption in the healthcare
industry, hospitals, and other related facilities can easily access comprehensive information
promptly. In turn, these organizations can make well-informed decisions about their patient’s
care. Notably, the gathered data can help healthcare professionals to minimize incidences of
making errors (Lenz & Reichert, 2007). IT implementation has the potential to change and
improve healthcare quality in the industry. However, the aspect of IT in the industry has not been
recognized by current IT solutions in healthcare. IT adoption in healthcare can only be enhanced
through advanced process management technology, which can also improve the quality of the
processes.

An example of a current IT and computer-based system adopted in the healthcare
industry is smart cards. Smart cards contribute to improved patient safety by facilitating a
reduction in errors as well as promoting quality care (Alota...
