DISCUSSION PROMPT - VIRTUE ETHICSTo ensure that your initial post starts its own unique thread, do not reply to this post. Instead, please click the "Reply" link above this post. Please carefully read and think about the entire prompt before composing your first post. This discussion will require you to have carefully read Chapter 5 of the textbook, as well as the assigned portions of Aristotle’s (1931) Nicomachean Ethics. NOTE: Chapter 5 introduces virtue ethics in general then turns to Aristotle in section 5.4 and directs you to read specific portions of Aristotle's text located in the "Primary Sources" section of the chapter.Aristotle’s account of ethics is “teleological,” which means that our understanding of virtue and living well is based on a sense of the “telos” (function, purpose, or end) of something (see Aristotle’s text and the textbook for the full account). Engage with the text: Using at least one quote from the required text(s), explain the relation between virtues and living well... what Aristotle would call "flourishing," or eudaimonia, and briefly describe some of the key virtues necessary to achieve this state. After briefly discussing virtue ethics and the quote you have provided from the text:Reflect on the first video: This first video clip is from the movie The Bridge Over the River Kwai (1957). In this scene, we find Colonel Nicholson and Major Clipton discussing a bridge that the British soldiers are building in the background. Ordered to build the bridge by their Japanese captors, originally the soldiers thought they would obey the orders but that they would take their time, do a poor job and perhaps even sabotage it so it wouldn't be useful or safe. Colonel Nicholson changed all this by ordering his men to build the best bridge they were capable of building. After viewing the clip, discuss whether or not you think Colonel Nicholson's choice to have his men build the best bridge is consistent with virtue ethics. If you think that they are, briefly identify at least one virtue (reference the text here) and discuss how his choice reflects or embodies that virtue. Finally, briefly consider whether you think his choice is consistent with either utilitarianism or deontology and explain your reasons for thinking this. The Bridge on the River Kwai (4/8) Movie CLIP - A Lot to Learn About the Army (1957) HD (Links to an external site.)Reflect on the second video: The second video shows the final scene of the movie. I'll let it speak for itself, except to say that the bridge was about to be used as a valuable tool by the Japanese. After viewing the clip, state whether and why this final scene of the movie causes you to revise or reverse your view of whether or not the colonel's choice to have his men build the best bridge was consistent with virtue ethics. Make sure to explain your reasons for changing (or not changing) your initial assessment of the morality of Colonel Nicholson's actions by drawing upon at least one central idea in the moral reasoning of virtue ethics. What Have I Done? - The Bridge on the River Kwai (8/8) Movie CLIP (1957) HD (Links to an external site.)Discuss with your peers: When responding to your fellow students, discuss whether you agree with their initial assessment of the colonel's actions and/or with their assessment after viewing the final scene.
