Analysis of The Addams Family (1991)
The Addams Family (1991) is not one of the movies that had the best production history, but
when the final work was over, the effects and reception were commercially successful. It has
since received sequels since, with the latest being the animated The Addams Family (2019). The
Addams Family (1991) entails several and well-developed features that make it fun and exciting
to watch (Maslin). However, in this paper, the primary focus will not be on the whole movie, but
on a specific scene from the several eye-catching, thrilling, and sometimes, weirdly funny scenes
from the film.
Further, for a better analysis of the different features such as characters, sounds, quotes,
mise-en-scene, this analysis will focus on the specific shots in which these components appear.
In this essay, I will focus on a scene in which Gomez’s family, led by the Grandmother, try to
reconnect with the spirit of his lost brother, Fester, just before Fester appears at the door (from
17:54 to 20:04). Like in many films of the same caliber, the movie director, Barry Sonnenfeld,
who was also a former cinematographer, used different aspects of movie making such as lights,
camera motion, shot length, and characterization, to create a fascinating and thrilling, yet
