Introduction
Psychology is a study of the conscious and unconscious part of human beings to
understand the mind and behavior. The scope of psychology is wide and covers aspects such as
the biological, psychoanalytic, behavioral, humanistic, and cross-cultural perspectives. There are
various ways that one can understand the perspectives. We shall analyze the film, the Color
Purple, to have a better understanding of various psychological perspectives.
Discussion
Synopsis of the Film
The film, The Color Purple, is based on the book by the same title by Alice Walker. The
storyline revolves around the life of a black woman named Celie. Celie is abused repeatedly by
her father and later sold into a life of servitude under her brutal husband, Albert. Celie has a little
sister named Nettie, whom she writes too often. The letters that Nettie writes back are hidden by
Albert. Harpo is Albert's son who wishes to marry Sofia. Marriage is forbidden by Albert, but
they continue with the marriage. Albert's old lover, Shug returns and develops a close
relationship with Celie. Through Shug, Celie can gain courage and peruses Albert's stuff where
she discovers old letters from her sister, Nettie. Celie confronts Albert and leaves the marriage to
start a life alone.
