Hydraulic fracturing is a process that involves drilling and breaking the rocks that contain
oil or gas beneath the earth by injecting water and chemicals through high pressure. The process
is considered economical by the mining firms because it improves the flow of oil or gas and is
therefore important in wells that have low flow. While this is the case, the process of fracking
has been a major drawback to water sources owing to the use of chemicals such as surfactants
and biocides (Chen, 2019). Apart from the chemicals, volatile organic compounds and
carcinogens are used which are really toxic to life both beneath and above the surface.
