ChAD 173 Alternative ITERS Assignment Description – March 17, 2020 For this assignment, you will view and score an online video clip highlighting a toddler classroom in a group child care center using one edition of the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale. You will use either the ITERS-R or the ITERS-3 to score the quality of this toddler classroom highlighted in the video. The assignment submission includes two parts: 1) a 4-page paper that is based on your video observation, and that integrates an empirical article on the developmental outcomes associated with an item of the ITERS and 2) a copy of your completed Score Sheets and Profile graph. Instructions for the video observation: 1) Review the ITERS manual: a. ITERS 3: Read page 9-13 of the ITERS-3, on “Administration of the Scale.” Note: you do not need to access the supplemental resources that are mentioned on page 10, number 6. b. ITERS-R: Read page 5-8, “Administration of the Scale,” “Scoring System,” “Score Sheet and the Profile,” and “Explanation of Terms Used throughout the Scale.” You do not have to read the “Alternate Scoring System.” 2) Be sure to read through all of the rating items listed below, before viewing the video. You may choose to photocopy the relevant pages of the score sheet to use as you watch the video. 3) Access the online video by clicking this link (the link is also available on Canvas) https://login.libaccess.sjlibrary.org/login?qurl=https://video.alexanderstreet.com/watch/ daily-schedules-and-caregiving-routines/clips/154592 You will need to log into the MLK library using your SJSU ID and password. Captions can be activated by clicking the “CC” symbol on the video. You may find it helpful to use headphones, but this is optional. 4) As you watch the video, take notes on the Score Sheets to identify examples to support and justify your ratings. If particular indicators (yes/no checkboxes) cannot be scored based on the video, write “NA” directly on the score sheet (e.g., if you are not able to estimate the number of items accessible to children). ITERS-3 ITEMS TO OBSERVE: If you are using the ITERS-3, you must observe the dimensions and items listed below, which are a subset of the total that the scale contains. Space & Furnishings 1) Indoor space 2) Furnishings for care, play, and learning 3) Room arrangement 4) Display for children Listening & Talking 9) Talking with children 10) Encouraging vocabulary development 11) Responding to children’s communication 12) Encouraging children to communicate 13) Staff use of books with children 14) Encouraging children’s use of books Activities 15) Fine Motor 16) Art 17) Music and movements 18) Blocks 19) Dramatic play 20) Nature/science 21) Math/number 22) Appropriate use of technology 23) Promoting acceptance of diversity 24) Gross motor Interaction 26) Supervision (non-gross motor) 27) Peer Interaction 28) Staff-child interaction 30) Guiding children’s behavior ChAD 173 Alternative ITERS Assignment Description – March 17, 2020 ITERS-R ITEMS TO OBSERVE: If you are using the ITERS-R, you must observe the dimensions and items listed below, which are a subset of the total that the scale contains. Space & Furnishings 1) Indoor space 2) Furniture for routine care and play 3) Provision for relaxation and comfort 4) Room arrangement 5) Display for children Personal Care Routines 10) Health practices 11) Safety Practices Listening & Talking 12) Helping children understand language 13) Helping children use language 14) Using books Activities 15) Fine Motor 16) Active physical play 17) Art 18) Music and movements 19) Blocks 20) Dramatic play 21) Sand and water play 22) Nature/science 23) Use of TV, video, and/or computer 24) Promoting acceptance of diversity Interaction 25) Supervision of play and learning 26) Peer Interaction 27) Staff-child interaction 28) Discipline Instructions for the Paper: Note that these instructions are very similar to those from the original version of the assignment. 1) The paper should include a title page, 4 pages of text, and a reference page. Use 12-point Times New Roman font, double space, and use one inch margins throughout the paper. Follow the guidelines of the APA manual in writing the paper and formatting the title page, headings, in-text citations, and reference list. (3 points) The reference for the video observation is: HighScope (2011). Daily schedules and caregiving routines. [Video/DVD] HighScope. Retrieved from https://video-alexanderstreet-com.libaccess.sjlibrary.org/watch/dailyschedules-and-caregiving-routines 2) Do not use the actual name of the institution or of the children and adults highlighted in the video. Provide pseudonyms. (2 points) 3) Introduction: Provide an overview of the observation. Briefly summarize the purpose of the observation and the use of the ITERS assessment. Include the estimated number of children and adults in the classroom, the age range of the children (i.e., toddlers), the length of the observation, and any other pertinent information (Indicate that you are using the alternative assignment). Be sure to clearly state which version of the ITERS you are using. (5 points) 4) Classroom Strengths: Discuss the strengths of the classroom. Refer to the pattern of scores in the Profile Graph (specific items and dimensions). Include the relevant dimension (average) scores, and discuss specific examples (items) to justify your conclusions. Provide specific recommendations for maintaining areas of strength you have identified. (10 points) 5) Classroom Weaknesses: Discuss the weaknesses of the classroom. Refer to the pattern of scores in the Profile Graph (specific items and dimensions). Include the relevant dimension ChAD 173 Alternative ITERS Assignment Description – March 17, 2020 (average) scores, and discuss specific examples (items) to justify your conclusions. Provide specific recommendations for improving areas of weakness that you have identified. (10 points) 6) Research Support: Select any item from the ITERS (e.g., behavior guidance (discipline), promoting acceptance of diversity), and obtain an original study that assesses its significance for developmental outcomes. For example, the article could address why it is important for infants/toddlers to have certain kinds of experiences, such as being exposed to diversity; what types of disciplinary methods are most useful for this age group; what are the different ways that any one of the items could be implemented and why; are there cultural variations to what are deemed to be developmentally appropriate best practices? You may also provide supplementary evidence from lecture and the textbook. However, these will not supplant the empirical article. Summarize the study in your paper, including a brief description of the study purpose, sample, data sources, and key findings. Link the findings of the study to your actual observations from the video. (8 points) 7) Conclusion: Conclude the paper by discussing whether you would enroll your own child in this classroom. Reflect on why you would, or why you would not, enroll your child. (2 points) 8) Appendix: The Appendix includes the completed Score Sheets for each of the items and the completed Profile Graph. (10 points) ** Submit an electronic copy of your paper and Appendix to Canvas on or before the due date.

Introduction
This ITERS observation is based on the assessment from the Tender care infant toddler
series. The assessment is through the use of an online video depicting the facility and the
activities of the tender care infant-toddler services. The essence of this assessment is to
determine the level of care that the children are subjected to and the quality of the services and
the amenities that are present. The assessment also assesses the strengths and weaknesses of both
the caregivers and children, as well as determining their likelihood of improvement. For this
assessment, I have used the ITERS-R type of assessment. I am using an alternative assignment
for this assessment.
The classroom that I am assessing has an estimation of fifteen children. The children's
average age is about three years. Some seem to be as young as two years, while others are about
four years, which brings my average to about three years. The adults in the classroom are about
two. The adults' average age is about twenty-six years. To come up with this assessment, I have
observed the classroom and the activities going on it for 44 minutes. The classroom is rather
busy from the observation because every child seems to be part of an activity. The room is not so
big, and the children seem to be sufficiently put up.
Classroom strengths.
For the strengths of the class, I have used the profile graph’s pattern scores on specific
dimensions that are provided in within the classroom. I have analyzed five areas that have
enabled me to come up with the relevant observatio...
