THE CUBAN SWIMMER
“The Cuban Swimmer” is a play that gets to reveal several attributes of the characters.
Motivation is one of the key of traits portrayed by the characters in the play. Margarita Suarez is
one of the key characters in the play. Margarita Suarez plays the role of the daughter in the
family. The play is generally about a swimming competition where Margarita Suarez
participates. Margarita has her father as her trainer in swimming. From the play, it is evident that
Margarita`s motivation is getting to win the competition (Kirszner, Laurie, and Mandel). From
the first scenes of the play, it is quite evident that Margarita still had some few loose ends that
she needed to tighten up. Her father in the first scene told her to keep her arms parallel to the
water. This shows that Margarita probably did not have her arms parallel to the water hence
portraying one of the loose ends that Margarita needed to tighten. However, due to having the
motivation to win the race, Margarita took in the advice from her father and was able to continue
swimming according to the instructions given to her. This is a clear depiction of the fact that
Margarita was motivated to winning the swimming competition.
Secondly, Margarita`s motivation to win the swimming competition is evident from the
fact that despite facing the challenge of encountering an oil slick in the process of her swimming.
