Question Description

It took an airplane 2 hours to fly 640 miles against a headwind. The return trip with the wind took 1 1/3 hours. Find the speed of the plane with no wind and the wind speed.

The plane goes against headwind so the planes velocity= plane speed -wind speed

When he flies back he goes with the wind: velocity=plane speed+wind speed

Now we make our equations:

320=p[lane speed -wind speed

480=plane speed+wind speed

Add both eqns:

800=2*plane speed

plane speed=400

substitute back into second eqn:

So: Plane Speed=400 mi/hr, Wind Speed=80 mi/hr
