all the black people didn't know that they had freedom

That is correct. Prior to the civil rights movement of the mid 20th century onwards, black individuals had little knowledge of their rights or freedoms. While President Lincoln had signed into law the Emancipation Proclamation many decades earlier, the political and social climate did not facilitate these disenfranchised individuals realizing their rights. Frequently, the blacks were oppressed by their slave masters and forced to live in a society that did not recognize their rights or freedoms. In a society, where they received little education and exposure to laws and politics, these individiduals, in many instances, were left wholly unaware of the rights they did have and the freedoms that were guaranteed to them.
