FREN 1112: Final Assignment
Integrated Performance Assessment
Overview
The goal of this assignment is to evaluate your performance on three types of communicative tasks in
French:
1. interpretive (comprehension) – 20 points
2. interpersonal (asking questions) – 20 points
3. presentational (writing an invitation) – 20 points
All of the communicative tasks will focus on the material covered in Chapter 4 of your Horizons textbook
(culture, vocabulary, grammar), but you will also use aspects of French that you have learned in previous
chapters.
CONTEXT:
You are studying in Québec, Canada, and living with a Québécois host family. Your host mother invites you
on a trip to the city of New Orleans in the state of Louisiana, USA to visit some of her other French-speaking
relatives. In preparation for the trip, she asks for your help in planning some of the activities that you and her
family will do together.
1. First, you will read information about different activities to do in Louisiana (p. 2-8) and answer some
comprehension questions (p. 9-10).
2. Then, you will come up with some questions to ask your host mother to find out more about the
family so you can choose a few activities that they might enjoy (p. 11).
3. Finally, you will write an invitation to your host mother’s relatives, inviting them to join you as you
spend time doing the activities that you have planned. (p. 12)
1
1. Interpretive Task (20 points)
On the following pages (p. 2-8), you will find information about a number of different activities to do in and
around New Orleans, Louisiana. Read the information carefully and answer the questions that follow (p. 910). I suggest that you read the questions first to help guide your understanding of the reading.
There will be words you do not understand, but by using the words that you know and making educated
guesses about the meaning of other words based on their context, you can figure out the most important
ideas in each section. The questions can also help you better understand the material.
