Independent variables are variables that keep on changing from time to time. On the other
hand, dependent variables remain constant. In research activities, the researchers can control and
alter the dependent variables but they can only measure the independent ones and not control
them. Independent variables can be altered to determine the effects that they have on the
dependent variables. An example of this is when a study is being carried out on the effect of
media violence on aggression. Media violence is the independent variable while aggression is the
