Description

ss11

As you have learned, the Human Development Index is a list of factors that are ranked by the UN, and indicate the quality of life for an average citizen of a given country. For this assignment, you are to choose a country that ranks low on the Human Development Index and prepare a report on it. In your report, you will compare four (or more) factors that explain why your chosen country has a  lower HDI than Canada. You will also include a section on your ideas for solutions to poverty for your chosen country. Poverty is always a factor in a low HDI.

Use this website to choose: Human Development Reports. Scroll down the page for the ranking list. Choose a country on the “Low Human Development” list.  Clicking on the country’s name will take you to a page that shows the statistics that have lead to the low Human Development rating (click on the button that says ‘Open All’).

Next, in a new tab, look at the statistics for Canada (note that is 2011, Canada was rated 6th in the world!).  Your job in this assignment is to find out which statistics are leading to the difference in ranking between Canada and your chosen country, and prepare a report.

Common statistics that may lead a country to have a higher or lower ranking include life expectancy, years of schooling, GDP, and maternal mortality rate (the number of women per 100,000 births that die in childbirth). For example, Canada’s maternal mortality rate is 12 – so out of 100,000 women who give birth per year, 12 die. The maternal mortality rate of Pakistan, ranked 145 in the world, is 260, more than 20 times Canada’s rate.

There will be two parts to your presentation:

Part 1: Comparing statistics The comparison of at least 4 of HDI indicators in which Canada outranks your chosen country, and an explanation of how these HDI factors in particular drag your chosen country down in the rankings. 24 marks

Part 2: Solutions to poverty Poverty is almost always a factor when a country is low on the HDI. read up on possible soultions to poverty, and, choose 2-3 you think will work for your country, and explain how they work, and why you think they would help your country. This part should be 2-3 well edited paragraphs written in proper paragraph format. Use websites like this to research your solutions: Ten Solutions to Poverty 12 marks

Explanation & Answer

It won't let me upload as a word file. So I'm going to copy and paste it below.

Canada ranks number 9 on the HDI list for a reason, actually, for multiple reasons. I
chose Honduras to compare to Canada because it ranks 131 on the HDI scale. They are
both majorly different countries and have a few statistics in common, but only a minimal
few.
Homicide Rate:
Canada’s homicide rate is 1.6 per 100,000 people. This means that the law enforcement
and laws are working as expected. With organization and stern tactics, Canada keeps a
great majority of the population safe and sound. However, in comparison, the suicide rate
is pretty high. For females, per 100,000 people, the suicide rate is 4.8. That is not that
high if compared to the suicide rate of males, which is known to be 14.9. The suicide rate
is so high in Canada, in my opinion, because suicide is considered a “beautiful” thing in
developed countries. It is a play on Shakespeare and any other ancient artistry. Suicide is
supposed to be a “blissful” experience according to Shakespeare and with bullying and
teens and young adults looking for a way out, it is the easiest decision. On the contrast,
Honduras’ homicide rate is 90.4. That means that there is no structure. No government or
law enforcement are trying to protect their citizens from harm. People are murdering each
other quite frequently most likely for resources that are so scarce, that they have to kill
for. On a more positive note, the suicide rates are significantly lower than those of
Canada. For females in Honduras the rate is 2.8 and for males the rate is 8.3. The suicide
rates are lower because there are so many murders, people do not have time to kill
themselves. Plus, the idea of suicide being a “beautiful” concept does not exist there.
Maternal Mortality Rate:
Canada’s maternal mortality rate is 11 per 100,000 live births. This rate is so low because
Canada has the resources and doctors to keep both the baby and the mother safe during
live birth. Developing countries such as Honduras do not have that luxury. Their maternal
mortality rate is 120. They do not have the doctors or sanitary hospitals to receive the
babies and save the mothers at the same time. In developing countries, the maternal
mortality rate is expected because of the lack of resources. One of the parties involved in
birth have to get saved and it is normally the baby over the mother.
Percent of GDP, Exports and Trade:
Canada’s exports and trade is 61.9% of the entire GDP. For Honduras, the percent is
117.5%. This shows that Canada relies on outside sources for goods and products, but not
as heavily as Honduras does. This is why Canada is so successful in what they do,
because they make themselves stronger internally so if other countries pull out of a treaty,
it does not hurt them. However, with Honduras, if a country were to stop providing a
product, the results would be close to devastating. Honduras relies way to heavily on
outside sources to ever be fully successful on their own. If they were to work on internal
resources like Canada, the outcome would be much more positive if something bad were
to happen with traders.

Population Living on Degraded Land:
In Canada, not a lot of people live on degraded land because the government makes sure
people are in more sustainable areas for their needs. The percentage of people living on
degraded land in Canada is 2.7. In contrast, the percentage of people living on degraded
land in Honduras is 15. As stated earlier, this is a matter of the government not being
fully involved in their people’s needs and wants. As a developing country, there is a lot
that needs to be done to improve the quality of life and it starts with the government.
Solutions for Poverty:
Poverty is an ongoing problem in all developing countries. There is poverty
everywhere you turn, however. Even in developed countries there is poverty, but there is
just a lot less than developing countries. There are many problems that create poverty and
even more when it comes to trying to get rid of it. Poverty is a sticky situation and leads
to countless amounts of deaths and crimes.
In Honduras, the main problems they have are lack of resources and government
intervention. The first problem that they have...
