Explain at least two (2) roles that different parenting styles play in shaping the overall behavior of children. Indicate the significant impact that each role has in contributing to delinquent behavior among juveniles.
A strict parenting style where discipline is emphasized can lead to rebellion and a desire to "act out"
A lax and care-free parent style can lead to a feeling of neglect and can cause children to "act out" to gain attention.
In the first scenario, the child acts out in rebellion because the feel frustrated by the overbearing nature of their parents. To gain a sense of independence and freedom they may partake in actions they know their parents will find disapproving on purpose.
In the second scenario, the child acts out to gain attention and concern from their parents. The child desires his parents to be more in touch with what they are doing and is willing to put themselves in a poor situation to obtain this.
Both of these responses by the child come in response to dysfunctional parenting styles. To avoid either extreme, a balanced parenting style is needed where proper discipline is balanced with concern and compromise.
